tion, "What became of the Confederate
gold*." The Charlotte (N. C.) Demo.
crat speaks-positively as to the fate of
the 'archives," as follows :
"We think we knox something about
the Conifedcr%te archives. The Confed
crat3 Government was broken up in
Cha:h te, in ;r:!, 186->. We sawPres
ilent Davis and severa! members of his
Cab-net-reckinridge, Benjamin, Rea
gan, and others-ride out of the city on
horseback, with about a thousand caval
ry soldiers.
"TI.e Adjutant General, Cooper, had
charge of the hooks and papers of the
Co:.fadcrate Government, arid after get
ting them this far, was unable to move
tis,,m farther south. They were stored
at this place, and when a division. of the
Federal army occupied this section, the
said books and archives were shipped to
Washington.
"WIVe think the above is a correct ac
count of the disposition of the Confede
rate archives."
The New York pap-ers anncunce the
arrival of the advance guard of tLe mis
sionaries sent by Archbishop Manning to
work anong the blacks of the South.
These :re soon to be followed by forty
more, and these again by four hundred.
