MeRS. EDITOnS: In my last I promised
to extend the sketch of the arr:ugemert;s of
the enterpoi.e of Me.srs. Knox & W likiock,
if agreeable to you, and now propose in this
letter to continue it. Leving the Conmissa
ry Store on the right, a brozd road leads to
T:e bold lai.ding orn ti:e creek, at wh-ch the
Steamers of the Mt. Pleasant 1erry Co., can
load. What we cuil c:eeks in this p:rr of
.he country, (I woId remark "par parerthe.
sis") would be coeidered very big rivers
with you. This fine I.mding furnishes wa
ter communication with the city, and affords
great advantages to this place. Farther up
the stream is anther, avaiiable for wood
boats, at wh ich immense quantitks of the
fuel cut on the place find its wa.y to the
city market, and now there are lacge quitai
ties corded up in the svoot-s awtiting opp!!or
tunities of shipme.
The tractcontains 1,FeO acres, .of which
about-200 was planted in Sea 1sland co:on
and about 150 in rice.. corn and provisions.
About 200 freedmen live on the place. matny
of whom rent small tracts of land, and the
rest are the employees, all of whose services
are available- when necessacy.
These gentlemen also ouitivate the adjoin
ing place, belonging to Mrs- Thoinlinson, on
which is a large 1:ody of reclaimed tmarsh
land, on the head waters of Schem Creek.
-They have here in:Sea Jsland cotton some 63
acres.
They work also anotS'ir pianltiOlon ouhe
sea shore, about*7 miles from thae illag~e, for
merly kDown as Toomecrs, on which they
have about -85 acres eettom. This ptlace is
superintenided by Mr. Wmn. Hale, who~ is an
energetic and industrious farmer.
Another place, about 3 miles f-arther, for
cuerly the property of Re-v. Mr .art-er, is also
under their operation, having as manager
Mr. Whaley, the whitening fids of which
'.cover an area of something lite 201 acre..
