If the report is true, the uncertainty of human life and the insecurity of human happiness could hardly be more strikingly exemplitied. Mrs..Corcoran, then Miss Maggie Beck, w as, daring last winter, one of the reigaing belles of Washington. The na tional reputation of her fither gave her, on her first appearance in that society, a high standing, which was maintained and increased by her own beauty and at tracttveness. So far as Laurens is concerned, the people, both white and b!ack, were never more quiet, and we sincerely be lieve will remain so, so long as those persons who have been the cause of all the difficulty which has occurred in this countyistay away from this place. There was an election held in this place, on Tuesday last, for town officers. The waite and the black voted together and for the same ticket, and the utmost har mnony and good feeling prevailed, and we conscientiously believe if the two people were let alone to work out their own destiny, that the former good feeling between them will speedily be restored. Those whose interest it is to create hosfility between the two races for per sot-a-political purposes are responsible for all the difficulties which have ever occurred in this County.
