MY LITTLE WIFE.
The following love story is by a new
poet, celebrated in the July number of
Blackwood-David Wingate, a collier from
his ninth year:
My little wife often round the church bill,
Sweet little, dear little, neat-footed June,
Walked slowly, and lonely, and thoughtful,
until
The afternoon bell chimed its call o'er the
plain ;
And nothing seemed sweeter
To me than to meet her,
And teli her what weather 'twas likely to
be,
: fy heart the while glowing,
The selfish wish growing,
That all ner affections were centered in
me.
Mv life once ('tis strange, but '%is true),
Sweet little, dear little, love-troubled
Jane,
So deeply absorbed in her day-dreaming
grew,
The bell chimed and ceased, though she
heard not its strain ;
And I, walking near her
(May love ever cheer her

The following is an extract from Judge
Carpenter's late Charleston speech. We
would like to give the speech entire as
reported, but as our readers will all en
joy the high privilege of hearing him 9n
Monday and Tuesday next, we are con
tent for the present:
The Democratic party in the pasthad
its old principles, which are now dead,
and it comes with Republicans to join
hands, as all good men should join hands,
to put down corruption and secure a good
Government for the State. No man be
come a-Republican because he votes for
meu, ih an a Republican. And no man
becoines'a Democrat because he votes for
my gallant and distinguished colleague,
General Butier. I shall make the cam
paige to the bitter end of the war. I
will preaeirto displace falsehood and cor
ruption by virtue and integrity, and I
shall oever give up the fight while life
lasts. All the shafts are not aimed at
mre. TJoy are aimed at the people. I
have been threatened with assassination
if [ did .aot~desist from my denunciation.

more chan three hundred robbers and

suppose these will be the patriotic as
sssos. When Scott said that South
Carolina was a nest of assassins-he
must have alluded to these-and he had
the iwuudence to say in one of his mes
sages4ikt he had par-doned them out so
that they could vote. The country has
passed through a bitter war, may friends.
You on one side and I on the other. But
r.o brother ever clasped the hand of
ar.other,more cordially than I do that of
my abfe coleague, General Butler. Let
all the old rev-enges of the war die out,
and keep in remembrance only that noble
patrotismn that filled the breasts of all,
North-and South, and welded the whole
nation into the vast brotherhood which
makes us the greatest nation upon earth.
Let us rememb,er the soldiers who fell in
the causes for whbich they fought. Fame
is secured to many. Th;ey perished upon
the battle-tield, fighting for their con
victions like men, and died like heroes.
They are immortal. Their fame is as
imperishable as civiliztation itself.
Now what are our chances ? Against us
is the corrupt Ring who Sill every place ;
with thenm is every carpet bagger with a
thin bag who comes here to stay a short
w hile and fill hris brig. Ail the thieves
pardoned from the penitentiary and all
that are at present in there, arnd ail th.t
ought to be there are against us ; all the
greedy wolves are aga inst us. (Laughter.)
Whio nre for us? All honest men, all
intelligent men. The hopes of wid'ows
and orphans, and the prayer of the up
right and pious cluster around the flag of
Union R~eform. Last, but not least, Eter
nal Justice is with us. No power on
earth-not the o,cean~not Niagara-not
the thunder itself--has that matchless
power which Eternal Justice has. It
nerves our arms and on that great day of
October it will be called upon to preside
at the victory over thieves and robbers.

ing by the knitted brow and com
pressed lip, glide near, and laying
a confiding little hand on their
knee, lift their clear young eyes
to those loving faces.
Elections will be held this fall in all
tihe States except Oregon, California,
New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode
