NEW YORK FASHIONS.
NFW YORK, JULY, 1869,
Summer.has set in with its usual severity,
and as usual, the butterflies of fashion have
betakni themselves tj tie seaside atid the
imoultain tops-and taken with them such
quanitice1 of cloth1ing and It all so new aid
beautiful and stylish. Organdy muslin and
Swiss embroldered miuslin for morning wear,
and silk grenadine for evening, and tihe
most jaunty of % lite piqe Jackets for cool
days, and muslin lists and hoods-think of
hoods and hats of white )nuslin-and very
charming fresh young faces look in these
same hits and hoods when lioed with rose
colorole muslin, and tied with rose-colored
strings, edged with button-holo Mitch lin
white floss. . Tihe shape m6q.t approved for
the hat in m111slin is that known ais the gai
den shape, small crown, large brim. Tihe
muslin hood is Nubia shapm ; a shape as Iin
definable because as indelinite as a shape
can well be-the lining is generally turned
over in front, thus forming a pretty revers,
and if of a becoming color to the complex
Ion, brightens up a bright face admirably.
In the same line but much prettier than
muslin hat or hood, is the white Cashmere
Summer Bonmet. This charming faney is
of E'glish origin and deserves to be con.
sidered an indispensablo appointment of
the wardrobe of' every lady who spends her

All the edges on every part of the hood
are scolloped and worked in button-hole
stitch with white needle-work silk.
White is very much worm this summer.
Morning, evening and visiting dresses are
made in the various white material suitable
for each. We have seen at the Metropoli

dress in white caishmere made enl Wattenu;
that is with a pleat falling from the back o)
the neck to the traini-it is delicately em
broidered in fern leaves with gold colored
silk ; thn leaves are in clusters oi the cor

aid sparingly up tile points. This is em
troidered oi the Grover & Baker machine,
iaid worn over a white silk petticoat. cm

silk, inl.stead of goid colored silk thread.
The petticoat miaey be of white muslii if

MR. EDITOR : We beg to trouble you
just long enougli to read this little comntmu
nication, and ask that you give the same an
ins;rtionl la the next issue of the IIerald.
Ear.v on Saturday morning, the 20th ilt
a nice lito assomblago of p)eople of both
sexes, stricly whites-imo colored ones pros.
ent-'could hait%o mbeeno seen grouped beneath
time shady boughs' of a towerlug hickory oi
the bank of Little Iver, engaged In the pres
paration to begin the fishm. Now whether
the fish, if cauighit, were. to be sold and the
proceeds divided amongst each individual
for his pecuniary benefit, or whether they
were to be cured, dried and fried before din
ner could be eaten, was a question which
elicited sharp debate. The question was,
however, postponed for farther conslderatln,
the result of which you shall shortly see.
Tho airrangemnots nov being complete, the
party divided into squads, consisting of gen,
tleman and lady, and were soo-n strung along
the river's edge and the f1sh ing begam; shouts
front the various quads reverberated the
fbrests Indicating that terrible havoc was
being mado amnong the little fishes; the fisi,
ling continued with unabated zeal until Old
Sol, not "old Sol of yore," in his meridian
splmndor together withi a little gastric vacuity
warned its that tile hour to (line hind arrived'
At this juncture, time party re-assenibled to
the green sward, near the hickory, to ascer
lain and exhibit the re.mults of the fish.
Squad No. 1, iluford and his mistress
counted out one cat-fish and two tad-poles,
Squad No- 2, Smininie aud his mistress,
presented two cat-fislm, one of them having
the mappe.a ranco ot' tie great lague of' A?ia,
inmd the other one that Ie liad, departed from
the rules of Iygienlia; Squad No. 3, White
and his mistress, 2 little creek minnows,
both in a state of putrifaction, had been
caught a week previous by a couplc of school
boys and forgotten ; Squad No. 4. Scott and
his mistress, four tad-polos when caught,
but on exhibition were found to be imetamor,
phosed into four green frogs, which, upout
discovering their freedom made off with a
kind of half-hammondimig bound, towards
time river, and were soon lost to sight-hut
not to car-for there they set ip a most deaf
ening croaking that made the "welkin ring."
Wol, now, Mr. Editor, you can readily imns
agine the conclusion arrived at-as to the
disposition of time fish, under the circum-n
stances you could hardly consider them inir'
ketable'and to have prepared them for our
dinner would have been ine unpleasant task,
nor would the dish have been very savory.
