the appointment of Postmnsters in such
places where nobody will swear .the iron
plad or tist oath. The bill was intro
duced by Mr. Norris, and it provides,
that it must be clearly showi to the
Postmaster General, that "no person can
be procured to act as Postnaster for sich
oMce," and as thei are manny phices
where no one can be f6und with the
proper requisite, that is a stonitch of
cast iron, copper fastened and bound,
and capable of holding this detestable
oath, the Post Offlec is in no little qu1anl.

Sheriff Shaw a- 41 a guard of seven men.
About one o'clock o'iSaturday morning the
Jail wits quietly surirounded by a body 4f
one hundred and fifty armned mien, disguised
aid comimanded b)y three offilers. One
hall' of the myslerious visitors were on
horst-ack, -the others on foot, all uni
iormed in blick, tirimmed with white, each
mam having a broad white banid around his
halt. Their appearanco it the Jail was sud
den, and the Sheriff saw at a glance that It
would be folly to resist. lie and Itis guard
surrendered, were politely relieved of their
arms, it nd they and tite Jail keeper were
pliced tnder guard in front of tihe mid
uight eavaleade. Tie prisoners were tAken
from tle jail, one at i lile, with their arims
tied at I heir bnek with a long white . rope

plateed beside tite Sheriff and his guard, aid
