'i'he high cost of Peruvian Guano and its excets of ammonia pro eludes its liberal use; 800 lbs. of' Pacific GuAno can le applied at little or no greater cost. than 200 lbs. of Peruvian, and It is certain the more liberal applica tion is the best paying Investment. The policy now Is to make every acre cultivated yield its maximum product, and this can only be done by a liberal use of the Guano. But a small increase of product Is required to conipensate for an additional 100 lbs. of tile Guano; while that additional appilcation.would prove of the highest advantage, both in Increased product, and Improvement of the soll. To secure the beat results from farming, Planters must cultivate only good land, or land maie good by manuring and't horotigh l'reparation. By subsolling, the land Is saved from washing, holds lon-er- tie moisture of the winter rains, and thus enables the laMI to counteract the suliner droughts. To sub soil, turn under the grass, ke., wilh a good turning plow, and follow in that furrow with it sub.soil plow. In old countries where lands havo been cultivated hundreds of years they still produce abundantly by proper cultivation and generous feeding with ma nure. Such lands are noW worth from $20 to $;00 per acre according ta location. While our lands were fresli;"they yielded abun dantly, but the system of shallow pjowing, together with failure to feed the land with manure, has resulted iu the soil being linpoveribhel and washed in unsightly gullies. The garden Is well manured and yields iccordingly (but even there, deep plowing or spading ie neglected) while the fickda are continually exhausted without nvm!igng, Cultivate les land, cultivate it well, and manure It generously, and you will be well paid for your libor; on the other iand, if you cultivate thin or unmanured land, you will find it "costs more than it'comes to." On Cotton any quantity can be used to advanta-ge but the greater the quantity the more profitable the result; as cotton yields according to tle trtility of the soil a wider differeuee than almost any crop. Guano increased the crop 3 to 4 timed. 400 lbs. Guano iureasedh the crop 5 to 6 times. How far a still greater quantity will profitably increase the crop, each planter shIould detennino for hitmself, on a smaller scale. If you apply 100 lbs. on poor land, give your cotton 8 feet each way. If on good land, not less than 4 feet. If you apply 200 lbs. to the acre on poor1 laud, give it 31 feet distance each way; if on good hand, fully 4 feet or 41- If you apply 400 lbs. to the acre on poor land, give it 5 leet each way.* These distances may startle many plant ers, but on rich land or land made rich by manuring, the plant lust have1- room to spread its branches and bear fruit. A rank growth (if crow led) often loses its under and mniddle crop 01 boIls by ret (especially in wet weather) while distance will enable it to openi. to single takof cottoni in a gadnis well known if the field is made rich like the garden, and has room to spread its branches, the result will be t.he same. An acre planted 4 z 4 will give say 9,700 stalks, which if yielding 50 boils to the stalk, will give 1,~850 lbs, cotton. If planted 5 x 5 you will have 1,700 stalks; 100 bolls to the stalk will give 1,700 lbs. Planters should test the above, on at lcast a small scale. In fact, we unhesitatingly reconnend it as possessing qualities espcially adapted to the soils in thip locality, and we intend to continue using It. M. S. ANDREWS9 F. G. MoELIIANY. Russam, Co., A.,A., November, 1807. Dear Sir-I have used Peruvian Guano, more or less, for the past twenty years. This year, for the first thie, I also used Soluble Pacille Guano, got from you. I used both on cotton, and the results, to the best of Imy judmeit, ahow one to b as good as the other. I had one field of about 18 acres manured with Pacific, and my opinion is that its yield (taking the quality of the lad as a basis) is better than any other flehl manuired with aither. The held on this field was 800 lbs. per acre, or double w int the land could have brought without manure,and I only used 100 lbs. Pacific per acre on this or any of my. land. I put the manure in the drill. J. i. J9NBS. Charles A. Peabody, Eiq., of Lee county, Alabama, in a letter, dated Nov., 1867, to Wil. II.1 oung, says: "The Peruvian Guano I had before used, and' know It to be an invaluable fertilizer for cotton. I now find the Soluble Pacific to be equally as good. At the same price, I would as soon have jL for cotton or corn as the Peruvian; some of my bauds insist that it is better." From GEORGIA. SPAyT, GA., December 9th, 1803. mr. J. 0. Mathenon: Yours of 20th October has been on hand for some time. I have been waiting to have my exj)eriment plat picked out, weicthed and onni rasted. last year the Soluble Pacific Guano paid 402 per cent. on the investment; the present year, 340 per cent. 'The experiment plot of last year was reserved and plantd a-ain without tny chige or addition. 'Vhe Solu ble Pacific Guano produced the second year 109 per cent. on the investment after allowing interest -at 10 per cent. for two years. The two years combined, made 601 per cent., while Peruvian Guano made only 475 per cent. The first year 355, the second year 120 per cent. The two guanos combined, made the first year 432 per cent., the second year, from the residuum in soil, 210 per cent., making 642 per cent. on invest. ment for two years after paying interest. These ex periments are conducted with conscientious precision, without fear, favor or hope of reward, only as It may benefit the public an( the experimenter, by indicating the cheapest and most reliable sources of Ammonia and Phosphoric Acid. This Is my first experi ence on small grain with Pacille, and so well am I satisfled of its superiority, that I used all Pacific op my snill grain now sowing, (except a few acres with Peruvian to continue the tests.) I applied both to corn and cotton about 100 lbs. to the acre, and If the seasons had been favorable I would have been highly.gratified at the yield, but no manure was of use to the plantes in my neighborhood on aceount of the excessive drought.
