and who lost to every sense of honor and

NEW Ox.EANS, October 23.-The
steamboat Gen. Quitman, from Vicks
burg for New Orleans, was snagged and
sunk yesterday, twenty miles above
Bayou Sara. All on hoard were saved;
boat and Cargo, consisting of 1,700 bales
cotton and 4,500 sacks cotton seed, a
total loss.
Last night, a number of disguised
persons entered Jefferson Parish jail, at
Carrollton, and shot two negroes, one of
wchom had been twice condemned for
rape on white women in '66, and was
twice repNieved, once by Sheridan and
once by Mower. The other was con
vietcl of rape and the murder of a white
girl, aged eleven, in Jef'erson Parish, a
few days ago.
About 2 o'clock this morning, a tire

of the fire, a num'er of negroes were dis

groes were killed.' The negroes and
whites then gathered from all' quarters,
armed, and the fight became general. A
company of infantry and a body of police
from New Orleans, however, prevented
anv further outbreak. The negroes
finally took to the woods, and very few
are to be seen in the neighborhood.

A late file of the Madrid Gazette affords
an apt illustration of the ease and rapid
ity with which the revolution in Spain
was accomplished. On the 29th of
September the GazeUe,apearcd as usual,
with the royal 'arms at the head of the
first page, and containing an official an
nouncement that "Her Majesty the Q'een,
with her august family,'? was.. still at
San Sebastian, and .that their ,"royal
healh"i' was excellent. The next
morning, without the interruption of a
single day, the Gaaette appeared with
the royal arms displaced by those
adopted by the revoiution1ry Jmnta, and
not a word regardlingr the: health of her
"august Majesty." Nothina could more
strikingly illustrate the sudde:mness anid
completerness of the collapse of the last
Bourbon throne of Euarepe.

When the PLANT4rzON BITTERS were
first made known to the American people
some seven years ago, it was supposed they
were an entirely new thngand had never be- <
fore been used. So far as their general use e
in the United States is concerned, this may
be true. It is also true that the same -bit,
tern were made and sold in the Island of St.
Thomas, over forty years .ago, as any old C
planter, merchant or sea captain doing bus, C
ness with the West Indies wIll tell you. It a
is distinctly wIthin my recollection that on r
the return of my father (who was a sea cap
tain, and. doing an extensive trade In the
tropics.) he would invariably have the 1it
ters among the ship's'stores, and our family
sideboard was never withotit them. For any.
sickness, it matters not how severe or tri. ~
fin~g, the decanter of these Bitters, by a dif- t
ferent name, was always resorted to as a f
sovereign remedy.

MARRIAGE NOTiCES As ADVERTISEMTs.
-We always expect remuneration for
the -insertion. of. marriege notices, and
hare so advertiscd, and yet these notices
:ome to us time and again without the ne
:essary accompaniment, or even the time
torored and coriplimentarT bride's cake.
When the tie comes as 4n adjunct, our
inagnaninity will not allow the accep
tance of the- usual -toney cbange, but
wvhen the notice- comes- "dry so," we
annot and do not insert the: interesting
act, that Mr. so-an4(so was weddled at
ch a time to the lovelj miss what's
e~r-name. Some expect the minister to
tttend to this little umat ter, without think
*ng of the cost, and when the interesting
nention of their marriage fails to appear,
~hey blame him no doubt, foir remiss
iess. This is unjii%t, the mirister should
ot b.c exp.eetd to pay for it; for in most
:ases the pittance he receives for l.is
'job" is snall en'ogh. It is the groom's
luiy'to see to it, and pay for it, and. un
ess they do so, we p1y no attention to
he request to insert, no matter who the
iiotice comes frc.fn. As we said above,
vben the bride appreciatcs the obliga
ion, and sends in her complimentary,
,ffering, as a recognition of what is due
he editor, then it is all right, we allow
he groom to go scott free, and hold no
barge against hinm; otherwise, however,
he cash fee must he forthcoming. The
rtide's compliment invariably over
ihehns~ us, and the money consideration
s lost-sight of in the tender and affee
ionate -appreciation conveyed in her
'favor" to the editor.
The reader not interested in the above,
rill pardon. us for so much about so lit

onsiderate people know what is so oftd n
ast sifght of, tnmely that we live by our
