ment. There is a good d'd in the
order, which,-it must be:eonfessed,
sounds very pleasant. Freedom
fron military rule, discharge of
political prisoners, restoration of
the'writ of habeas corpus, election
of officers by the people, all these
would indeed be great boons, if the
State were only the same State
that it was whem military rule was
first imposed upon us. But mili
tary rule has done its work tho
roughly, and we shudder to think
of the government for which it is
now to be exchanged.-Mercury.
Thad. _Stvens has promised to
present his new article of impeach
ment to the -House to-morrow.
As originally drawn up by. him a
few days ago, they were very
weak-and senseless; but he will
now be able to strengthen them
with a, new article, charging
the President with usurpation of
power in issuing his proclamation
of unconditional and unreserved
pardon to all: partieipants in the
late -insurrection or rebellion.

Tn the Issue of the Yorkville Enquirer lbr the
4th of June, will be commenced the publication
of the above thrilling and.interesting nouvelette,
written expressly its colhmns. by one of the
mostpopu a ruthors of this State. The princi%
pal scenes of this story are laid in Charleston
and vicinity, and the story cannot tail toWre
interesting to all who are familiar with the
events which occurred in that 'locality during
the late war.

that during all this time, there were persons in
the olty, "in high life," who were engaged as
spies in sending information to the beetes.
Diawings of the fortibcations were fraisbed,
weak points noted. and the movemdnt of;troops
indicated as soon as begun, and the fleet notified
of the time of artiual and departure of blockade
ruinning ves-els. So cautioas,y did these emie
saries of the enemy conduct their work, that for
a long time the skill of the most eminent deteo
tives was befflied in their endeavors to break up
the illicit correspondence. These spies were the
source of extreme annoyance to- the Command
ers in Charleston, and-the information they were
ena' led to furnish, often thwar ed their best man
tured designs upon the enemy. As a proof or
the completeness of this conspiracy, it may be
'remarked, that the daily papers of the city were
frequently read on board the blockade fleet, the
same day of their publication.
The author of 'Isolette, or the Female Spy,"
has taken the principal charactermand Incidents
in this afair, and under assumed names, has pre
sented them in the form ofta thrilling, and weU
written romance historic and imaginative. The
circumstanoes ofithe story are detailed a" begin
ning on James Island and in connection with
some of the South Carolina Regiments stationed
the re. After many thrillie adventures in
which the "female spy" figureslargely, the lie
roes of the plot follow their regiment to Vir
g:uls. before the walls of Petersbura. The sur
render of General Lee's Army in 1865, finds
them again among the Santee hills, where the
narrative closes.
