SETTLE 1p SETTLE UP !
1111 houg the Crop of cotton is small,
it l d lcioner in amount is. to a
eonsideralble extent compensated
by the great increase in its value.
One laie of the staple puts as
much money into the pockets of
the producer. as did two formerly.
There has been as vet in this com
munity. and we record the fact
with pleasure. but little disposi
tion to press suits for the collec
tiOn of debts. A good understand
ing appears to exist between cred
it( rs and debtors. Still old claims
and liabilities must at some time
be met and settled.' LEach.succee
ding year renders the burden more
<m(Io. We urge those of our
readers who have outstanding ob
ligat is to meet, to cancel as far
as possible their indebtedness, and
rclieve to that extent the general
scarci ty of money. Cash passes
rapidly from hand to hand, and a
lluand reed dollats put in circulation
in the mor:iing. may very easily
disc halg'(e a thousand dollars of
de,t betore Iight. The cotton
crop of this District applied, wise
ly a11 lIo111callv will go "ery
air toiwards the amelioration of
our present pecuniary condition.
We are anxious to see the good
feeling which at present exists
amongst us continue. and to effect
this (lesiral)le result, there 'must
he some general evidence of a de
sire on the part of debtors to ex
tinguish their obligations. The
mnaority of creditors are not mer
ciless Siylocks. but on the contra
ry are willing to effect most gen
erous compromises with honest
and worthy debtors. Let kind
ness be shown on one hand, can
dor and integrity nn the other.
Let justice and right govern both,
and we shall be spared the sad no
cessity of witnessing our people
engaged in litigation and their
homesteads passing for a song, un
dertlhe Sheriff's hammer. into the
possession of the avaricious spec.
