Charleston, July 20,?The badly decomposed body of an unidentified : < man was found in the tank of a Texas 1 company oil car here today while ( employes of the company were clean- ' ing the car preparatory to loading ^ 1 < it. The car was sent to Columbia j' loaded with gasoline on July 12 and f returned empty and with the cove.j( of the tank removed yesterday. Turner and a young woman companion came very near being killed at the Jefferies j street crossing on the Southern railway Sunday afternoon when the au- | tomobile in which they were riding was struck by train No. 38, which j passes Gaffney at 6:55. One wheel , of the machine was torn to pieces \ and Mr. Turner and the young , woman were slightly bruised. Mr. 1 Turner said he heard no whistle , sound, nor ringing of the bell. He is deaf in one of his ears. No. 38 is one of the Southern's fastest trains j and if. Mr. Turner had been one; second later both he and his com- j panion would very likely have been killed. Mrs. Rachael Price, one of the eldest and most highly esteemed women of the Hollow Creek section \ )f this county, died on Wednesday, j 24, death being due to a general areakdown. Mrs. Price was in her 53rd year and leaves a number of sons and daughters, besides many i )ther relatives and friends. Her msband died several years ago. The remains of Mrs. Price were j aid to rest in the cemetery at St. j John's Lutheran church on Thursday norning at'11 o'clock, a large con-! ^regation being present. Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Roland j c i Mrs. S. Elizabeth Roland, 69 years )ld, died at her home near Lex- : ngton July 24, following a brief i llness. Her remains were laid to | *est at Emanuel Lutheran church )n the following day at 11 o'clock n the presence of a large gathering j )f friends and relatives. In honor of her friends, Misses Lucy Brown, of Burlington, N, C., Sara Mae Gantt, of Florida, and Annie Smith, of Swansea, Miss Sara Meetze entertained at heart dice on the evening of the 20th, at the lovely home of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. P. Meetze, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion, the charming little hostess being assisted by Mrs. Burnette. The guests were met at the door by Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Warrants have been issued and arrests made of Fred Craps and Frank Menton for selling cocaine in violation of the Harrison anti-narcotic law. Pending a preliminary hearing Aumist 16. Crans. who was a rural free delivery carrier from Gilbert, has been released on a $500 bond, signed by Ernest M. DuPre and S. J. Leaphart. Menton's preliminary will be held July 27. The warrants for Craps and Menton, charged with violation of the anti-narcotic law,. were sworn out by W. H. Darby, deputy collector, July 15, and the arrests were made Friday by Deputy Marshal Mayes. ? C., last Thursday, over the Southern railway for northern markets, according to the Yadkin Vally Herald, published in Salisbury, N. C. The trains consisted of thirty cars each and were given right of way over the main line of the Southern. According to the North Carolina iournal thrve of thp train* passed through Columbia. Much of the fruit was from south Georgia, where the peach crop is now at its height. The cars were re-iced at the large Spencer cold storage plant. Cat This Out?
