O'Brien, one of his j assistants, came over to Eexington j Tuesday morning to complete. the; annual settlement with the county j auditor, county treasurer, county i superintendent of education and j county supervisor. "ft is always a pleasure for me to visit-Lexington and check up the affairs of the county," said Comptroller General Sawyer.. ''The sheets balanced to the exact cent, not a single figure having been changed by'tete. I never have the slightest trouble with the officers of Lexington. I have never, in ah my experience in making annual settlements with the various county-^officials in State, found better records than 1 here. The books of the auditor, Measurer, suffer visor and county neatly kept, and it requires but little time to effect a settlement/' Mr. Sawyer has a host of friends in Lexington who are always glad to have him in their midst.. County Treasurer Wingard presented the young comptroller with a basket of. the finest peaches ever grown in the county. .> " : Fourth of July in Lexington. ; < Monday was observed as the. fourth in Lexington. The day passed off very quietly. ,The banks and dispensaries of the county were closed; ail other business went on as usual. A number of Lexington citizens motored to Columbia to see the baseball games and automobile' races. Among those attending the Hill Climb and races at Wales Garden were Messrs. Sam Long#* Q. Y. Wingard. Dr. RiceJB. Harman and Bennie Harman. ;' . The day was wound up by a straw ride Monday night in which a number of Lexington young people took part. J udging from the singing and laughter as they passed the town it was a very enjoyable occasion. Y. M. C. A. Boys Give Minstrel On last Fridav night the Columbia Y. M. C. A. boys camped at Laurel Fall, assisted by some of the loc#l talent,- gave a very enioyable minstrel at the Lexington High School Auditorium: The jokes and songs were excellent. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of the show was dancing: the, Scotch Highland fling and singing by Physical Director Kadel, of the Y. M. C. A., assisted by several small boys. They were in kilties and typical Scotch costume, and accompanied their dancing by some beautiful Scotch songs in the dialect of the country.' A large crowd was in attendance, many motor parties from Columbia beirtg in the audience. Oak Grove News. (Written for last week). Sandel visited the county chaingang on Monday in corhpany with Supervisor Corley.> The chaingang is located about four miles from Cavce on the State Road, where it has .been located for some time. Dr. Sandel says this is the finest piece of road building he has ever seen, and that it will completely eliminate the trouble the county has experienced in the past in trying to keep up the section of road leading through Hogabaa Swamp. The new road is wide, well arched, and on each side Supervisor Cofley expects to plant grass, sp that the rains cannot rrfake ditches and holes 'Ion the side. It is alsb$?hted that Senator Sharpe j has the finest melons in the country, , and as to this the writer can testify, 'for he brought us two of the largest, i the juiciest and the sweetest melons we have seen in years, for which he : has our appreciative thanks. Frank Holt Commits Suicide. ! | Glen Cove, N. Y... July Frank Holt, the Cornell University professor who shot J. P. Morgan in his home near Glen Cove last Saturday, because Morgan- -was furnishing" money to England to light Germany, committed suicide in jail at Minenla tonight by climbing through the opening at the top of his cell do-, and then plunging' to die narrow , court below, breaking his skull. A picnic' dinner was: served on the grounds, together' with refreshments, and the pro- \ ceeds gf the day amounted to a neat ' little sum. "Snig" Dreher, a negro man, also fell irfto the clutches of the vigilant * Sheriff, he too, being charged* t*ith violating a labor contract. i v Joe Stradd, a white man,* was arrested at Gilbert by Sheriff Miller charged with vagrancy -and other jffences. He was earned before Magistrate Hayes, tried, convicted and sentenced to serve a period of 10 days on the chaingang.
