Fifteen Persons Killed.

were killed and more than 40
inured by a tornado which passed
throngh the western part of Acadia
Parish, in tbe southern portion of the
state late today. Only one white perorvr>

Nine negroes were killed and 25
persons are known Ho nave been injured
in Mermentao and vicinity.
Among several Those injuries are believed
to be fatal is John Brone?ard,
a well known planter and a member
of the XermSatan city council. At
Egan five negroes were killed and 20

Rescue parties tonight w*re visiting
all parts of the stricken district tc ascertain
th6 damage and to aid residents
in the outlying territory, many
of whom are believed to haye been
injured,

Thomas left Gaiiney this morning for
Potts' Gamp, Miss., where Nerc Littlejohn.
an escaped cohyict from the
Cherokee county chaingang, is under
arrest. Littlejohn was convicted several
years ago of manslaughter, he
having killed Bad Talley, another
negro. He was sentenced to two years'
service on the public works, but
appealed to the supreme court and

trial be wa9 again convicted and was
sentenced to three years. After serving
a short time ha escaped, but was
recaptured, and after serving about
18 months of hi3 three years' sentence
he again made his escape vand has
been at large ever since until a few
day9 ago, when he was arrested by
the authorities at Potts5 Qarap.

He was born In Lezington, S. 0., Oc:

and Bradley counties, east Tennessee,
on the Hiwasaee river, some 40 miles
above Chattanooga, Tenn., when the
'poor Los,' or Cherokees, were compelled
by Uncle Sam to take np their
sad and enforced march to the then
wilderness in the far West. In 1848
he was married to a Cherokee lady by
blood, the widow of Dr. Robert T.
Hanks, who was margaret Ann Ward
Morgan, a daughter of Col. Gideon
Morgan, who commanded the Chero- |
