Hints For Farmers* A good coat of whitewash in the poultry house would prevent a great many lice from ever seeing the light of day. Don't feed spoiled food to the poultry. It is poor economy, as they may become poisoned or contract disease, Rnrn all -rotteri fnnri immftdiatplv. If you are thinking of putting in an orchard and don't know how to do it hire a good man to do it for you. A good orchard is both profitable and pleasurable, but a lot of scrub fruit trees are worse than useless. Don't forg6t that all animals need wit in large quantities. A cake of rock salt should be kept where all the animals on the farm Can easily reach it. Or, better still, mix a few spoonfuls of fine table salt in the feed each day. The productive life of the average hen is only two years. 8ome hens are good layers at three and four years, but these are exceptions to the rule. As a general thing it will not pay to keep a hen after she-is three years old. The remedy for sour land is lime and proper drainage. First, drain off all f ? J ? -3 ?^4/v kftrtnm fl moisture sou auuw tuo ovm #u uo^uim. dry- Then spread ground limestone rock and as this works down into the soil you wili find all trace of sourness disappears. Daring the hot days of summer your hens need plenty of shade and plenty of water. Sse that they are given a plentiful supply of fresh water every day, and provide them some kind of shelter from the fierce rays of the summer sun. If you have no natural shade s sun shelter can be easily made from old bagging or burlap. 53 Candidates Have Qualified Columbia, June 16.?When the books closed at noon today fifty-three candidates had filed their pledges and paid the assessments for the Democratic campaign of 1914. Thome, director of the Ohio experiment station, says, "When the land begins to need lime it is a *waste of time, energy and money to continue to cultivate it until this need is supplied, for the economic use of every other fertilizing material, including manure, depends upon the lime j .supply." It is not advisable to use ^wbat is commonly epoken of as caustic lime. This freshly burned lime has V a destructive action on the humu9 01 -vegetable matter of the soil. Lime should be applied by means of ground .. limestone. For Better Eggs.
