The Graeco-Turkeysituation, however, has improved. Tarkey has replied in a conciliatory spirit . to the Greek note, demanding that the persecution of Greek residents of Asia Minor cease, and insisting upon reparation for injuries already inflicted. She has further invited the powers to 3snd agents to Asia Minor to make a < thorough investigation of the Greek allegations. Germany already has agreed to this proposal and in the meantime a courtmartial at Smyrna has sentenced 47 ( persons to terms of imprisonment varying from three to five years, for pillaging the Greeks, and has dis missed several officials responsible for bhe disorders. ; The reply of the Turkish govern- j ment to the note of Greece is conciliatory. It expresses the hope that Greece, like Turkey, will take steps to restore order, but it evades the specific demands of Greece for the reinstatement of Greek emigrants and the restoration of the property of j Greeks. < Plan a Big Pow Wow. , Batesburg, June 18.?The candidates for the governorship have accepted the invitation extended them bo be here on July 7, to speak at a big political rally of the four counties, ^ Lexington, Aiken, Saluda and Edgeheld. The invitation was extended j bhem at Sumter at the first meeting 3 Tuesday by J. Rutledge McGhee of Batesburg and D. R. Haltiwanger and Frank W. Shealy of Lexington. The senatorial candidates have been invited also but no replies have been received. Possibly about 10,000 people will be present at Summerland Springs when the time comes, and a ( big barbecue will be served by one of the well known cue artists of this section. Summerland Springs i9 a 3hort distance from Batesburg and Leesville and the people of this immediate vicinity as well as from the sntire section are anticipating a big lay on July 7. The speaking will be^in in the forenoon and likely will continue until late in the afternoon, including the recees for dinner, and ihe fullest opportunity consistent with 1 reason will be given the candidates tor the two most important offices to sxprf s their views to the people lereaoouts. ( An invitation is extended all from ither sections of the State to be prcsmt. . Drops Detective Burns. Grand Rapidr, Mich.. June 19.?Two ^ 3f the final acts of the International 1 Association of Chief of Police before ] jha annnal convention adjourned here lo-day were to drop Detective Wm. J. Barns from the list of honorary mem- * bership of the Association and to vote against amalgamating with the national organizations of sheriff and railway detectives. Barns' connection with th e Association was served withont bringing his name directly before the convention. A committee prepared a new honorary membership list, which the convention adopted. Barns' name did not appear ttLUUUg liUO UlCUlUCiBi The detective, however, did not escape criticism on the convention floor. His firm and himself were assailed by delegates for using the insignia of the I Chief's Association on the firm's stationery. Chief F. W. Hill, of Chattanooga, Tenn., who introduced a resolution authorizing the president of the association to take steps to prosecute non-members who make use of the insignia, declared Burns had violated his rights as an honorary member of i the association. The Hill resolution was passed. Several chiefs, however, said the principal reason for removing Burns from their membership was caused by criticism he is alleged to have made concerning methods of various police departments in the United States. Consecrate Church Leesville, June 18.?A new Lutheran church is to be consecrated the first Sunday in July next. It is situated between White Rock and the Broad I river, at Folk's school house in tne section recently added to Richland 30untyf from Lexington county. The Rev. J. W. Horine, D. D., editor of The Lutheran Church Visitor, and the Rev. J. C. Seegers, D. D., of the Lutheran seminary, both of Columbia, and possibly other pastors will make addresses. About ten years ago, the Rev. S. C. Ballentme had a caieumsm cxaas ui the school house. Later a Sunday school was organised. A chapel was then built, and a vigorous Sunday school was kept up, with J. E. Haltiwanger at its head. It has now beeu decided to organize into a church, and to consecrate the building, which is neat and churchly. Prospects are good for a healthy growth. ' i PBOFSSSIONAL CA.BDS. L. L.
