Jesse Howell, a white farmer, was j shofc and instantly killed by Willie Sharpe, a 17-year-old boy, the son of Noah Sharpe, a well known farmer, abont 9 o'clock Saturday right, the shooting hayiDg taken place on the front porch of the home of Tillman Bush, a son-in-law of Noah Sharpe and a brother-in-law of the boy, who did the shooting. A siugle-barreled breech-loading shot-gun was used, the entire load having taken effect in the neck, the charge entering just below the ear on the left side and making its exit almost in the same location on the opposite side, completely shattering the spinal column and causing instant death. The scene of the homicide is about IS or 20 miles from Lexington and about a mile east of the town of Gaston. The news of the tragedy did not reach Lexington until after 11 o'clock Saturday night, when Willie Sharpe sent a telephone message to Sheriff Miller telling him tha* fien'ad killed Jesse Howell in self-defense and that he was ready^'i?$$ace himself in the hands of tnsfl&tf. Sheriff Miller, accompanied by his son, Julian, Solicitor George Bell Timmerman, Coroner Weed and D. R. Haltiwanger, left at once for the scene. Arriving at the home of Tillman Bush a little after 3 o'clock Sunday morning after having traveled over the sandiest section of road in the county, a gnastly'tight greeted the party. Lying on his back, the uppdr'? portion of his body extending over the edge of the i' .za, the head resting on the grou?" md the other portion on the porch, with hands raised over his head, with a large two-bladed barlow handle knife slightly clasped in the right Land, lay Jesse Howell. The big blade of the knife was open, bat there was no signs of bloodstains to show that the instrument b*d been used. A lantern dimly burning was sitting on the washboard at the end of the piazza, and Noah Sharpe and Tillman Bush were the only gnardians of the body of the dead. Willie Sharpe was tound at the home of C. 0. Goodwin, a short distance away, where he had gone to await the arrival of the sheriff. Although living less than a mile from the scene, the wife of the dead man had not kbeen notified, of her husband's death, and it was after 4 o'clock when the news was carried to her. | It was daylight when the coroner's jairjr commencedita investigation. At the suggestion of Solicitor Timmerman, Dr. Brooker also made an examination of the person of Noah Sharpe, who claimed that he had been slightly cut on the neck and across the chest by Jesse Howell. On the ring finger of the left hand was found a short cut, apparently made with a knife. There was also a slight abrasion across the chest, bat the shirt and other clothing of the man failed to reveal any signs of having been slashed with a knife. Noah Sharps, was the next witness. He testified that he had just finished sapper and had come oat on the porch and sat down on a chaii% when he observed Howell coming through the yard. Howell, he said, came up bo where he was sitting and asked: ""Who is this," and he replied "ThisiE Noah." To this he said Howell replied, "I'll get you now," with an oath. Sharpe said that he pleaded with Howell to wait and "let's talk it over," but instead of stopping he attempted to cut his throat with a knife, which he held in his hands, and was only prevented from doing so by his own ef- | forts. A second or two later, he said. Willie Sharpe appeared in the door with the gun in his hands Howell made one step toward Willie and had started to make another when he was shot dead by Willie Sharpe. The witness said that no words passed between Willie Sharpe and the deceased;, that his son fired at once a .d Howell never spoke after he was shot. Solicitor Timmerman directed his inquiry j toward the knife. Sharp6 stated, that j Howell had the knife in his hand at the time he fell. It was brought out during the examination of the witness that Tillman Bush and his wife had had trouble with the dead man about six weeks ago, a result of which the Bush's had had Howell indicted. The old man disclaimed any knowledge of the accusation his daughter had made against Howell. Tillman Bush testified in the main abont fcbo same as his father-in-law, Noah Sharpe. He, too, claimed that Howell had the knife in his hand immediately after he had been shot. The verdict of the jury was in effect that Jesse Howell came to his death by means of a gunshot wound in the hands of Willie Sharpe. Willie Sharpe made no statement further than the fact that he had shot Howell in defense of his father and in defense of himself. He was bronght to jail by Sheriff Miller Sunday. Gowan, in the National Loan and l?x* change bank building the first of the 2,000 registration books were mailed out this morning to the chairmen of the county executive committees in South Carolina. Mr. McGowan is secretary of the State Democratic executive committee. The Democratic convention in the new rules concerning registration declared that all the existing club books should be destroyed and that the state executive committee should provide the new books for the clubs.
