When 6een today Prank W. Shealy, the popular and efficient clerk of court of Lexington county, said: "I am in the race for railroad commissioner. I only decided to become a candidate after canvasing the situation thoroughly with my friends who | have interested themeeivesm my be-? half. At this time I have no claims or i prophesies to make concerning the 1 onteome of the campaign. I can only J say that I haye had ma y assurances of support from all parts of the State, aDd that I expect to make a clean and vigorous campaign for the office. I am not prepared at this time to announce my platform, but hope to be able to do so at an early date. I will say. however, that I shall advocate only such principles as I believe to be for the best interests ot the whole peo-' pie of South Carolina." ' Mr. Shealy was county treasurer for a number of years and is now serving his second term as clerk of the court. He has never been defeated for any office to which he aspired, and it goes ' without saying thajt he will receive an i ? j? BOX. FBAKK|w. SHEALY. . overwhelming majority of the votes :Of-Lexington county for railroad com* is attested by h^was i ig jn that capacity^ He was*" 11 ^ upon a farm in this county aniV fatter having died when he was- 1 at a t avlye-year-olc! boy, he was s on thereafter forced to the position of assuming the duties and respoDMbi ities of the head of the family. $>. Lwitfcl standing this handicap, he has worked himself up to his present position. Mr. Shealy is a man of practical railroad experience, having worked on a section for a number of years when but a mere boy. Although he has had. no connection with any railroad for twenty odd years, he gained quite a I valuable experience while he was so employed, which will doubtless prove a great beucfit to the people of South Carolina should he be elected railroad commissioner. The Horse Show. The horse show closed in Columbia I last week, winding up with a grand ball at the Jefferson Hotel, which was j highly enjoyed by all present. The I show was a succes1 as to horses and J exhibition but the attendance was small. The management, however, deserve much credit for the first show, which in the future will be greatly improved. We notice among the exhibitors, Mr. J. Henry Bodie, of Leeswlle, one of j our progressive young men and a dear lover of fine horses. He had his fine j horse exhibited in class 14, wno made j such a creditable showing thai, n re- ! ceived much praise and a prem urn of j $75.00. Mr. Eugene Hook, of New Kuokland also received a tremiam of $2j.C0 and Mr.' W. A. Wessinger, of t hapin, won first on class 40. bay si Hliou 'pacer" a silver cup. Washington, April 28.?The Mexican crisis now is centering on the issne between those who are seeking, through the good offices and intermediation of Latin-America, to find some middle gronnd for pacific adjustment, and those regard a resort to arms asan inevitable consequence of what has occurred Throughout to-day two distinct branches of activity were manifest here?that of the envoys of Argentina, Brazil and Chile, in formulating a plan of adjustment to be submitted to the United States and the Hnerta regime, and that of the military and naval forces of the United States, which continue to go forward steadily in preparation for any eventuality which may develop. The arrival of Qen. Fnnston and a brigade of five thonsand troops at Vera Ornz was one of the notable military developments of the day. % ~ . .v ' .
