George Baxter, Captured
Lexington, S. 0., Oct. IS.?George
Baxter, a desperate negro who escaped
from thA Lexington county chaingang
four years ago last February,
waB captured in Wilmington, N. 0.,
by Sheriff Sim J. Miller on Saturday,
after a search of more thanfonryaars.
Baxter had served bnt one month of
a three-year sentence for larceny of
live stock, he having been convicted |
of having stolen two cow9 from the
pasture of a Lexington county farmer.
Pp| Baxter, along with three other negroes
' made a dash for liberty while the
|? chaingang was located in the Dutch
?: - Fork, aud made a successful get-a-way.
Two of the other three have been capV
tured, and with the capture of Baxter,
leaves only one of the four at large.
Sheriff Miller caught Baxter in less
||p than thirty minutes after landing in
the North Carolina city, the oceffir
having previously located his man.
Baxter is one of the most desperate
men with which the county has had to
- it.*
deal 10 many years, rreviuus lu uio i
trial he made a fierce attack on Sheriff
Miller in an effort to escape jail, but
the Sheriff's wonderful presence of
? - ' - mind and absolute strength subdued
the prisoner.
"I am sho" glad to get back, boss,"
said Baxter yesterday afternoon as he
alighted from the sheriff's automobile,
**I have not seen a bit of pleasure nor
peace of mind since I left, and I'm
going to be good from this on. I was
~ looking for Sheriff Miller every minute.
for I knew that* he was on my
trail and would eatob me sooner or
later. I just decided that I would not
try to hide further, and when I saw
the Sheriff in Wilmington on Saturday
; I was the happiest mail ill town."
Baxter was carried back to the chaitgang
in the Dntob Fork to-day.

have announced the engagement

He is a graduate of the University
of South Carolina, and is a young
lawyer of rare ability, having but few
equals as an advocate, and bc-ing a
wise and careful counsellor. He has
{ many friends throughout the State :
who will learn of his approaching marriage
with keen interest and pleasure. I
