Swansea. Oct. 10 ?The public schools
have started here with Smiley F. Porter,
of Newberry, as principal and ftliss
LalT. Richards, of Liberty Hill, as
first assistant and Miss Sallie Pate, of

teacher and other assistants will
come in as the school increases.

Aaron D. Dowling has bean critically
ill for two weeks, bnt is considered
better by her physician. She has ty*
phoid fever and bronchitis.
The patrons of the Mack school district
here had abarbecoe last Saturday
for the benefit of trustees in building
a new school house and a nice sum was
raised for the pnrpose. A speech to
the Fanners' onion by Mr. Raid was
mnch enjoyed and the crowd had a
jolly time.
A strong petition has been sent np
by the ladies and citizens of Swansea

Mr. John Bast, traveling for Sollivan
Hardware Co.. of Anderson, has
' been on a visit to his old home in

The Presbyterian College of South
Carolina and Newberry College will
meet on the gridiron at the Fair ground
on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 11 A. M.
On Thursday of Fair week at noon the
University of South Carolina and
Olemson College will play foot-ball.
The Garnet and Blaok took the Tigers
scalp last year but the latter are planning
revenge while Carolina intends
"to duplicate the victory.
Motorcycle races on Wednesday,
Automobile races on Thursday, meeting,
of game wardens Thursday morning,
competitive drill between companies
and the presenceof the Winthrop
college and clemson corps are some
of the features which will draw thousands
of visitors to the South Carolina 1
State Fair whioh will take place t he
last week in October.

Scooter boy, was found dead in his
room Monday, a pistol shot having
