Lexington.?After a deliberation of
six hours the jury in tihe case of the
etate against John Sligh and Leo
Summers, negroes, charged with bav*
' ing entered the store of Geo. A. Cumalander,
at Cfcapin, a few weks ago,
returned a verdict of guilty.
Greenville.?The new city recorder,
Judge E. Inman, lias assumed the
> ' gment seat" and dispensed justice
like an old hand. City Attorney
"Wilton H. Earle was also on hand to
prosecute offenders of which there
were many.
Spartanburg.?The city council has
authorized the sale of $100,000 worth
of coupon bonds for street and sideValk
improvements. Bids w,ill be received
October 20. The bonds will
run for 30 years and will bear interest
at the rate of four an da half
per cent.
Branchville.?Several days ago the
residence 01 J. hi. h*yra on sou in
Main street was destroyed by fire. It
originated in a rear room upstairs and
was not detected until the smoke
broke * through the window, upstairs.
It must have been burning for some
time before it was seen, as no one
was able to get upstairs.
Spartanburg.?After a rest of several
months Spartanburg will engage
in another whirlwind money-raising
campaign of the kind which ha3 proven
so successful during the last fewyears.
The First Baptist church will
raise 315-,000 an three days to pay off
the church debt of $13,500 and improve
the auditorium.
Greenville.?If present plans are
carried cut, the next exhibition of the
Greenville Horse Show association

It is argued that a fall exhibition
would give the farmers better opportunity

Columbia.?The debating council of
Che University of South Carolina has
decided-- that the university will uphold
the affirmative of a question in
regard to the value of the commission
form of government to -Southern
cities, in the annual debate with Davidson.

Spartanburg.?Joihn Wood, secre?
tary of the Spartanburg Chamber of
Commerce, has returned from Wash- j
ington, where he held a conference
^with officials of the Southern railway
regarding the erection in this city of
a union station. It is understood that
the various plans the railroad engineers
have submitted have not proved
satisfactory.
Washington?Mayor Grace of Charleston,
who filed charges with Speaker
Clark, involving the right of Representative
Richard S. Whaley of the
First South Carolina District to hold
his seat, appeared before the House
Elections Committee. Mayor Grace
was told that his sworn petition, filed
with the Speaker, was not specific
enough to satisfy the committee.
Johnsonville.?The Johnsonville tobacco
market closed a most successful
season a few days ago and plans
are already on foot f< / enlarging the
floor space so that the warehouses
will have more room ?or the next season
and new prize houses are to be
built so that the buyers will have ad
ditional room for handling their tobacco.
Columbia.?Exceeding predictions
in regard to the growth of the University
of South Carolina is the realization
of an unprecedented growth. To
date there are in actual attendance at
the University of South Carolina in
the neighboflhood of over 100 more
students than there were at this date
last year and all indications point to
a continued rdgistratk 1 throughout
the session.
Lexington. ? That I/exington will
have a cotton seed oil mill in the
near future is the anouncement that
was made recently. The People's
ginnery, of which C. W. Caughman
and E. J. and J. R. Corley are the
managers, will promote the new
enterprise.
Carters ville.?A very remarkable
old character passed away recently.
He was Henry Haynes, an old "befo' de
war" darky, who had just celebrated
his 110th birthday. He was no doubt
the oldest person in Florence county
.or perhaps in the Pee Dee section of
the state.
Edgefield.?The Edgefield Rifles
were mustered into service by Inspec
'tor General W. \v. -Moore, ?nu
from Columbia for that purpose. The
company restored to its former
place in the state militia and will
hereafter be known as Company F of
the Second regiment.
Irmo.?The rainy weather put a
stop to all farm operations and seriously
injured great quantities of hay
which had been cut the week previous.
A great many farmers are
preparing to sow. crimson clover,
alflalfa and vetch, also more oats than
vwsual will be sown.
