Three candidates have announced definitely that they will be in the race for mayor of Columbia, the latest enhftinor Dr. L. A. Griffith, surgeon, and a son of Col. D. A. Griffith, superintendent of the penitentiary. Mayor W. H. Gibbes has stated that he would be a candidate to succeed himself. F. S. Earle, a member of the present city council, made an announcement Tuesday to the effect that he had decided to throw his hat into the ring and take his place among the aspirants for the highest position in the municipal administration. The municipal election will be held : in April and already the candidates J are blooming forth like the flowers in spring. The coming of a new day j brings ont a new candidate fcr com- J missioner or mayor. Two commissioners will be chosen at the same time that a mayor is elected. Lexingfc mmmmmmmmmmwmmmmmssi William Monts Dead. ff" William Monts, a well-known farmer residing in the Dutch Fork section of Richland county, near Ballentine, died at his home last Wednesday after an illness of six weeks with typhoid fever. Mr. Monts was about 60 years of age, and, besides his wife, is sur vived by four children, two sons and two daughters, all grown. The remains of the deceased were buried at High Hill Lutheran church, . in Lexington county, at 11 o'clock Thursday in the presence of a large ^ congregation of relatives and friends. | } Shoes for Everybody. ?
