Snmmerland College Opens.
The Summerland college,. midway
between Leesville and Batesburg
threw open her doors on Tuesday to
a large number of fair young ladies
who will pursue their studies here this
session.
A large number of citizens from
this vicinity and from a distance were
assembled in the college auditorium
for the opening exercises which had
been carefully planned by the able
president of the institution. Miss
Walaron, the music teacher, presided
at the piano and several songs were
sung by the entire audience. Rev. J.
J. Long read the Scriptural lesson and
led the prayer. Among those who
addressed the audience and particularly
the students, were: Rev. A. E.
Drigger3, pastor, of the Leesviiie
Methodist church; Rev. S. C. Ballentine,
pastor of the Leesviiie Lutheran
church; Rev. E. G. - McCullough,
pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church
in Columbia; Mr. Sea well, superintendent
of schools at Batesburg, on
the part of the mayor, extended welcoma
to the faculty and students and
Rev. Monroe, the president of the
college, extended welcome from the
mayor of Leesviiie, also made a short
address to the friends, supporters and
students of Summerland college.
Ihe addresses were all well delivered
and appropriate for the occasion.
They will undoubtedly tend to increase
interest in this institution and cause
it to grow until its influe. f-e goes far
beyond the borders of t . state and
throughout the Lutherc orld.

( Dispensaries foi; Lexington.

Hook, comprising the Lexington county
dfipensary board of control, held an
important meeting Thursday in which j
srany matters in regards to the early
opening of the dispensarios in this
oeunty were considered. It was agreed
Aat the county should have five diefensaries
to begin with?one at Lexington,
one atBrookland, Peak, Swansea
and one at either Leesrille or
Batesburg. The board will meet again
SB September 27 to hear arguments of
ftose seeking the dispensary at Batesburg
and Leesville in order that the
board might be advised as to which
place will be proper for the dispensary.
Both of these towns voted against the
establishment of the dispensary by
good majorities, bat it is certain that
?ne of the two towns will have a dispensary,
the matter being left entirely
In the discretion of the board. Batesborg
and Leesville have been dry
towns for many years, so far as the
legalized sale of whiskey is concerned,
and it is likely that a strong protest will
be made against the establishment of
a dispensary now.
The board decided to advertise for
bids at once, and Oc ober29 has been
et as the date for the consideration
f the various bids.
Suit Brought Against Railway
J. D. Harman, of Gilbert, has
brought suit against the Southern
Railway Co. for fl,975, alleging that
he was ejected from a passenger train
about a mile from the city of Columbia
July 26, this year, and as a result
the plaintiff had to walk to the union
station in Columbia, "thereby causing
him physical pain, humiliation and
great mortification," according to the
co: oplaint.
It is also alleged that the plaintiff
purchased a ticket at the union
ftation over the Southern Railway for
Jlackstock where he had an important
engagement, and so told the agent
at the time of the purchase; that the
director of the traiD directed him to
the train which he boarded, and he
was not apprised of the fact that he
was on the wrong train until the conductor
came around to take up the
tickets.
