Lucas was the scene of a bountiful birthday dinner which was given in commemoration of Mr. Lucas' 64th birthday. . The occasion was greatly t enjoyed by the large crowd of rela tives and friends present. Notwithstanding the fact that Mr. Lucas has passed three score of years he is very sprightly and lively. The elegant dinner was prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Lucas and their relatives and friends and it seemed that new recipfs had been added to the culinary art. Lemonade and ice cream was copiously served. Before dinner Rev. Daniel Shumpert addressed the crowd on an appropriate subject. The day was spent pleasantly by the joung people who played games, and sang with music rendered on the organ. The popularity and esteem in which Mr. Lucas is held in this vicinity was attested by the large number of presents carried nim, among which was a " large cake with his name inscribed on it. ! Polite and Pr An Afternoon Well Spent Thursday afternoon, July 3rd, was a happy time for Hattie Lee Wingard and David Medling and their many friends who came to enjoy the entertainment that was given in the shady grove that surrounds Mr. Medling's home. It will be noticed from the above that many of the little hosts aided in the well arranged and prepared program. The yonng actors wore attracttive costumes and the visitors were well pleased with the good performances. Every number was well rendered and each one of the little performers received much applause and praise. Afterjall had enjoyed the play they were treated to refreshments which were served on the green lawn. And J the heat of the evening was driven away by the nice cream which was enjoyed^by all. Those present were Mrs. C. M. Medling,Misses Celeste and Juanita George, Pearle And Bruce Oanghman; Carrie Maye andJHattie Lee Wingard; Sara, Katherine and Bart ha Sue Berley; Leone, Martha and Evelyn Kyzer; i Louise McCord, Master David, James Naal, and Reuben Medling, Omerle and Hubert Roberts, As they parted for their homes all agreed that the afternoon was much enioyed'and those who planned the entertainment received many thanks and much praise. County ^Medical 'Meeting. The County Medical Society held its summer meeting here on last Monday and was attended by many of the most prominent members of the medical profession of the county. Dr._Nichol9on, of Leesvilie, read a we"l prepared paper on malaria in its variations, which i9 always important in a mosquito locality, while Dr. Oxner and Dr. Drafts gave their recent ex perienees with meningitis in their professional duties and other subjects of interest to medical profession. The next or annual meeting will be held in Batesburg on the 3th of October when the doctors are expecting to have a good time which Batesburg always offers them. ' Mr, and Mrs. Thos. Adams, of Leesville, are sending out cards announcing the approaching marriage of their daughter, Mattie Jean, to Prof. L. B. Haynes Thursday, July 10th, at 10 a. m. at their home. Mis9 Adams assumes the distinction of being the first lady graduate of Carolina University, and is one of Leesville'9 most talanted and well known young ladies. She has been teaching for a number of years at the Meridian Female College and 9he was tendered the position for ensuing session but she declined. As an educator, there is no man better than Prof. L. B. Haynes, the groom. He has been president of Leesville College for more than 20 years and hundreds of worthy young men and women owe a Uhoral prim-* tion to his generosity. Prcf. Haynes is the principal of a large and flourishing school near Spartanburg and he and Mrs. Ilayues will reside there.
