This insect *v_ burrows into the heart of the stalk 1_ and gradually eats its way downward ve to the -base, leaving only a hollow - i _ or shell. A patch of sweet corn was aea* strayed by this pest within past few 30 weeks on the state farm, about seven miles north of Columbia. A report came from Newberry of a half acre f. being infested there. er One method of destroying the pest ^ is crop rotation. When the stalk dies in the fall the borer remains in the e' dead stalks, and if the same land is a planted in corn the following year the a? borer pupates, and again the field is 3k infested. The safest plan is to pull le the stalks up by the roots and burn them, as the borers are often down at he the very -base. [9. Plans and specifications have been drawn and accepted by the Lutheran congregation of Greenville for their building to be erected on North Main street. It is estimated it will cost about $20,000 to construct- the buiding, making the entire church plant cost something like $30,000. No Prosecution Under Webb Law Washington, June 10.?The Webb law forbidding interstate shipments of liquor into "dry" States is not a crimI inal statute and violations of it can [ not be prosecuted in the United States courts. Attorney General McReynoids so declared in instructions sent today to every United States attorney in the country. The law merely prohibits such interstate traffic and contains no penalty for infractions. "Irs purpose," said the attorney general, "is to permit State laws to operate in respect of intoxicating liquors moving in interstate com1 merce." The law simply deprives shippers of any privileges they might claim on the ground of interstate commerce and permits the application of State prohibition laws to interstate commerce in liquors.
