While in Charleston the other day, Senator John L. McLanrin, of Bennett9ville, told a reporter for the News and Courier that hewasnotlosing mnch sleep over the Gubernatorial aitnatinn. and that, he was not anxious to join "those unhappy and sad eyed birds who fluttered so early in the political field and haven't found either the worm or the old Gubernatorial shoses." The occasion oI Senator McLaurin's statement was an article printed in the News and Courier recently referring to the activity of W. P. Beard in Senator McLaurin's behalf, it having been very generally understood tbronghtout the State that the Marlborough Senator will run for Blease's place. When a9ked conserningall these various reports, Senator McLauiin, at the Argyle Hotel said: "Well, I have been just as strongly urged by the other friends of the GovnTnnii J J f faformn cr tr> thp rdnnrfK cnn J UV? Mr. Beard is a personal friend of mine and I appreciate the good will of any citizen of either faction, and were I to enter the list I would, as a matter of course, expect the support of all my friends. "I am not losing much sleep over the proposition,'' he continued, "for I have reached that point in life where I do not ?are much about engaging in a scramble for anything,, and where what happens to mo doesn't matter much. Experience has taught/ne that a nan is only aseful and happy when he is working for others, I proposed the cotton warehouse bill for the benefit of all, and I did not expect it to land me in the strife of the kind of politics that a^e a curse to the State, and nothing but a keen 9ense of duty will ever get me into the game. It does not attract me. "In the State Senate IJam not lined up with either, but have honestly tried to take measure on ineir merits anu it is absurd to speak of me as 'feeling out' public sentiment through Mr. Beard or any one else. I am not hunting a job, nor am I anxious to leave the quiet life I am leading to join those nnhappy sad eyed birds, who fluttered so early in the political field and haven't found either the worm or the old Gubernatorial shoes.
