LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE.
Synopsis ol the Address of the Hon.
A. F. Lever, at the Meeting of the
American Forestry Association.
^.r. Chairman and Gentleman: To
conserve something is to preserve it
lor posterity, and a man who cannot
live beyond his own life is not living
at all, and that, to my mind, is the
keyn te end the fundamental idea of
this whole conversation movement.
, When I came to Congress about 12
years ago as a mere boy I was struck
with that idea and fell under the spell
of the leadership of the men in Washington
who had consecrated their lives
to the proposition of conserving to
the American people the great forests
of this country. I was so much impressed
with that idea that I was one
of the authors of what is now known
as the Weeks bill, taking over the
mountain ranges of the New England
and Southern States and" conserving
them to the Amorican pubii..
THE NOTION'S FORESTS.
We have an area of something like
170,000,000 acres in the national forests.
That is larger than the State of South
Carolina. What we shall do with it,
how we shall deal with it, whether we
shall turn it over to private interests to
be exploited and used, or whether we
shall conserve it for the American people
for all times are questions that the
the next Congress will decide. We
are entering upon a new administration.
For more than 15 years the oppostibn
party has had control of the
government. I think it only fair to say
W)tn respect- TO ioieswy at least, uiai
through the energy, activity and the
alertness of the agricultural committee
your program of conservatism has
been fairly well carried out.
What will be the policy of the Democratic
party in the Senate and House
in the next Congress with reference
to this great policy of conservation,
not only the conservation of the forests
that we now have, but the problems
of the conservation cf the world
and of the earth and of the ever
great questions that enter into Amer

be considered by a bouy of as intelli- [
gent m^n as is gathered here tonight, j
I do not know what is in store for us,
but I hope, as a matter of promotion,
to be the chairman of the committee
on Egricullure in the next Congress.
O! measure my words when I say them,
that if I am chairman of the comnriiiKo

should be made to directly or indirectly,
secretly or in the open to stop 1
this great movement for the preserva- !
tion of the American forests for the
American people, that I shall be constrained
as chairman of that committee
to go back a few years and canonize
that kind of proposition. In such
an effort I believe that I state the will
of the unanimous opinion of the
members of the committee on agriculture.
We are speudiug something like
$5,000,000 annually in the matter of
forest preservation and in a study of
timoerend all of i'.s related subjects.
The agricultural committee is not going
to be parsimonious next year. We
are going to see to it that no insidious

I stand for the preservation of the

! NOT DAUNTED,
The Suffragettss Declare "War, Real
War" from Now On.
London, Mav 1 ?' From now on it
will he war?real war.'' This \*as the
deliverance of the presiding officer,
Miss McAuley, at the militant suffragettes'
weekly meeting in Essex hall
tonight. The women cheered the
annoueernent lustily.
That the belligerent suffragettes are
not daunted by the cautare of their
stronghold and the arrest of their leaders
was evident by the attendance
which far exceeded the capacity of
tne hall. Hundreds of women who
were unable to squeeze in remained
outside the gates throughout the evening.
In attempting' to surpress tha militants'
union Miss McAuley declared
that the government had tackled a
bigger job than it was able to carry
through. No amount of coercion, imprisonment
of it6 members or torture
would make them abandon the fight,
t-he said.
