Black Rot, Its Control and Cure.
H. W. Barre, Professor of Botany
The black rot of sweet potatoes
seems to be widely distributed through
South Carolina and in many cases is
causing serious loss. This disease
where present is readily recognized in
the fall when the potatoes are dug.
At this time it occurs as black, mottled
areas over the surface of the potatoes.
The disease does not seem to cause
serious trouble in the fall, but when
potatoes affected with it are stored, in
- banks or houses the disease becomes
more active and causes a rotting of tne
potatoes. In many instances we have
foand whole banks of potatoes destroyed
by this rot.
It frequently happens that all of the
potatoes in a bank are destroyed, In
such instances the ones that keep
through the winter and are not badly
rotyed are used in the next crop. The
desease was carried back to the field
on these slips. It remains there, attacks
the potatoes when they form,
and is bronght back again to the bank
after digging time. In this way it
continues from year to year.
Since this troublesome disease is
spread through the slips which grow
from diseased potatoes, it is very
necessary at this time of year that we
secure seed potatoes tor bedding which
are free from disease, Where no such
seed potatoes are available, it is advisable
to plant a small portion cf the
patch from the earliest slips you can
get and then as soon as these put out
vines, make cuttings from the vines
with which to finish the planting.
Black rot is a root disease and vines
taken from diseased plants will produce
other plants free from disease.
Where the disease is present, it is ot
course necessary to practice a rotation.
When you grow sweet potatoes free
from disease, you will find that it is an
easy matter to keep them.

and my profits have been so large that

The Meeting Adjourned.
A Lion who had long reigned with supreme
power over the Forest one day
called a convention of all the Beasts
and announced his intention of abdicating.
"I am growing old and feeble, and I
must soon pass away." he argued. "All
things considered, it is better that my
successor be nominated and installed
while I am living to give him the benefits
of my experience and advice."
There was general joy among the
Beasts, for the Lion had lorded it after
his own fashion. The Elephant was
squinting around, the Rhinoceros was
pushing his nose into the crowd, and
the Giraffe was doing a heap of think
ing way down in his throat, when the
Lion continued:
"After serious reflection and solemn
consideration. I have decided that my
own son shall succeed me. The office
will not only be kept in jthe family,
but the family will be kept in office.
There being no further business before
the meeting, we will adjourn."
"But why the need of this convention?"
protested the Rhinoceros.
"Well, there wasn't any particular
need of it." replied the Lion, "but it is
customary to call one in order to collect
the expenses of nomination. Brother
Giraffe, pass tbe hat!"
