Foes of Underwood Organize
Washington, March 20.?Opposition
from house Democrats who do not look
with favor on Representative Underwood's
plan to postpone renomination
of committees until the tariff bill* is
passed appeared to-day with the announcement
that about 50 Democratic
members from Nebraska, Iowa, Kaa8&s,
Colorado, California and other
Western states would hold a caucus
April 4 to consider this plan.
It is known that most of these Democrats
ar9 opposed to Underwood's
plan, claiming it is an attempt to clnb
Democratic members into line for
tariff duties which they believe too
low. The same combine of Democrats
forced the Democratic caucus March 5
to adopt a rule whereby members of
the twelve important committees of
the house should have no other com*
mittee assignments.

Han Lays Frsak Egg.
Washington, Ga., March 22.?A hen
egg more than six inches in length, '
having a body, head and tail, was the
curious freak of nature shown in
Washington today by Amo9 Blakey,
ft farmer of Wilke9 county, living near
Tignall. The egg was not fully matured,
having a soft 9hell which permitted
the freakish extremities to
move when handled, giving the appearance
3f a living animal.

exhibition and will probably be sent
to the Smithsonian institution in

PRESCRIPTION n
For a Long Life.
This Is the prescription for a long
life given by an old gentleman in Connecticut,
who is ninety-nine years old
and still well and cheerful, "Live
temperately, be slow to anger, don't
worry, take plenty of exercise in the
fresh air, and, above all, keep cheerful."
Should the system get run down?
digestive organs weak?the blood thin
and sluggish, take Vinol, which is a
delicious combination of the medicine
?body-building properties of cods'
livers, with the useless grease eliminated
and tonic iron added. We regard
Vinol as' one of the greatest
body-builders and strength-creators in
the world for aged people.
Mrs. Mary Ivey, of Columbus, Ga.,
says: "If people only knew the good
| Vinol does old people, you would be
unable to supply the demand; it is
the finest tonic and strength-creator
[ I ever used."
We wish every feeble gld person
in this vicinity would try
Vinol on onr agreement to return their
money if it fails to give satisfaction.

in an awful hurry."
"Sure," replied the young man. "Fire

Mr. Frick "fired away" at a rapid

"Fine, young man!" he exclaimed ae
he folded the letter. "Can you write
shorthand as well as you perform on
the typewriter?"
"Better." replied the young man.
"Well, I want you in my New York
office," continued Mr. Friek as he
handed over a five dollar bill, with a
nod to keep the change. "I'll pay you

"What'Jl you pay?" queried the
young man.

"Not for me," replied the young man

IMPROVING THE

Dr. Augustus S. Knight, an authority
on health statistics, was talking in
New York about the improvement in
the public health.
"This improvement is due," he said,
"to our more widely diffused knowledge
of hygiene. From the top to the
bottom of the ladder we now recognize,
to a certain extent, the value of fresh
air, temperance and exercise. Of course
improvement is needed, but rare nowadays
are men of Hay's stamp.
"Hay and his wife took a holiday one
Saturday and went on an excursion to
Atlantic City. Hay on his arrival there
strolled about the station, looked the
locomotive over and then disappeared
in a barroom.
"After an hour or so his wife sent
for him.
" 'Oh, .Jack,' she said, 'do come and
look at the sea and the sand! They're
so beautiful!'

A Costly Virtue.
T'nele .Toe Cannon, apropos of Washington's
birthday, said in Danville:
"Washington was veracious. Voracity,
I suppose, worked letter in those
days. It's a virtue now that often custs
its owner dear.
"A Danville man howled downstairs
from his den the other night:
! " 'Who went and broke my new meerschaum
pipe?'
"Little Willie, mindful of the approach
of Feb. 22, shouted back in
cheery tones:
" 'I done it pep! I cannot lie!'
"'You can't eh?' roared the father,
rushing downstairs, strop in hand.
