On last Saturday a Teachers' meeting was held in the auditorium of the Lexington high school. A large number of teachers were present and it ?- ?Kxr all nrpsent that this WW VUUVQUCU KTJ < r was the best meeting that tbis association has ever held. A large number of teachers were present for their first time and many new members were enrolled. They left the meeting feeling that they had been benefited ~ ' * * TV,a fiPBh Dy joining me ..? number of the programme was an article on the subject of reading which was contributed by Miss Ethel Dreher. hfiss Dreher is Rural School Supervisor for Lexington county and she lias had a good opportunity to look into the school conditions in this ?* . county and knows the need of teaching reading in the most improved ' methods. Hiss Dreher is a teacher of maiij years , experience and she handled her subject in a very good way. Dr. E. C. Btdgell, of Bate9burg, pointed oat the need for the teachers to attend the National Corn Exposi tion wbioh is to be held in Colombia, beginning Jan. 27th and going for two - weeks. Dr. Ridgell pointed oat the importance of this exposition and showed how it was brought to a Southern city. He made an earnest < appeal to the tesehen to oe tree w the land of ."Dixie" by closing their school* and going to this great Corn * Exposition. Dr. Ridgell's plea was eJoqo^nt and earnest and as a result many of the teachers were impreaed .wifch the importance and greatness of 1 Ibis National Exposition which will I be held almost at onrown doors. Copt. John Bell To will made a few remarks in which he heartily endorsed v compulsory education. He said that wa belonged to the State and' the State had a right to see that Its future citizens should not be brought up in ignorance. Mr. Towill spoke earnestly and eloquently in behalf of compulsory education. An InTitation to have a meeting of the association at Batesburg at an early date was considered. After some discussion it was decided that meeting of the association would be held in Batesburg. This meeting of the association was con* ceded to be the best ever held. Besides the nnusnal large number of teachers present many of the citizens of Lexington and vicinity were present. The next meeting of the teachers will be at Lexington on Saturday, February 15th. A still larger number of teaohers are expected to be at this meeting, due to the fact that Prof, W. K. Tate will be with us. Prof. Tate has just returned from Switzerland where* he has studied school problems and no dnnbt his address will be very intei v eating. Besides Prof. Tate there will be other good speakers on the programme, so that those who come will be assured an interesting meeting. Immediately a* the close of the next meeting a lancheon will be served. Assigned to Committees. The members of the Honse of Representatives frotr. Goodwin, one of thi most highly esteemed citizen of Lex ington county died at his home a Gaston on January 24th, in the 62nd year of his age. Mr. Goodwin tool an active and conspicions part in ai movements tending toward the up building of his oonnty and the uplift ing of its people. He was a good bus band, an affectionate father and i kind neighbor. In the social and re ligion8 spheres of life he discharge< his every duty in a manner that at tracted to him a larsre circle of ad miring friends and acquaintances. Ii bis death Lexington has lostausefu citizen and bis place will indeed bi hard to fill. He leaves a wife am seven ceildxen to mourn his passing away. Oar sympathies go out to tbi stricken family.
