TYPHOID FEVER
Is Due to Neglect Says Br.
J. LaBruce Ward.
THE DEATH BATElIS VERY RlfiR.
Another Interesting Lecture in Pub*
lie Health Series Delivered at the
University of South CaroJina.
MFOr every case of typhoid fever I
somebody should be hang," was tl e
remark of Dr. J. LeBruce Ward, quoting
Dr. Osier, in his lecture on public
health kt the South Carolina* University
recently.
"Typhoid fever, like the poor, will
always be with us,"said Dr. Ward. One
half million people annually have ty- j
pbold fever in the United States, and J
of these 40,000 die.
The eldest account of typhoid, written
by a Frenchman dates from 1813, ! .
though the disease was an ancient one.
Typhoid is caused by a germ discovered
in i860. This specific organism is j
the seed of the disease of typhoid. The
three main sources of typhoid are polluted
water, polluted milk and the fly
which carries the germ from polluted
soil to food on the table, especially
milk.
Typhoid is highly communicable
The typhoid germ lives less than a day (
in the sunlight. Flooding houses with
sunlight will prevent the growth of
the germs. ]
Typhoid fever is especially preva- j
lent in unsewered parts of towns. In j
Jacksonville, typhoid was cut down 50 1
per cent, by the extension of the sew- 1
erage system. Eighty per cent, of the
farms of Sol h Carolina have no prevention
against soil pollution.
"The typhoid rate is the index to
the intelligence of a community," j
said Osier. "Education means erad- i
ication of typhoid fever. Pure water, :
pure milk, and war against the fly 1
will destroy the disease."?The Colum- ]

Dr. Wm. Sadler, author of "The !
Cause and Cure of Colds," says that
common colds should be taken serious* ]
ly, especially when they "hang on." i
Polev's Honey and Tar Compound is a
reliable household medicine for coughs
and colds* equally effective for children 4
and for grown persons. Take it when
you feel a cold coming on. It will avert
danger of serious results and cure
quickly. No harmful drugs.
