BEAUTIFUL DREAM
Mr. Brooker Goes to Slesp and

NULLIFIES THE CONSTITUTION.
Mr Brooker Apparently Forgets That
the Contitution Forbids the Destruction
of an Old County by Annexa|
tion or Otherwise.
Columbia, S C , Nov. 10, 1912.
Mr. Editor: I bear that you published
au article on consolidation, written
from Chapin. I have not s^en it, bur.
whatever its nature may be, I desire
that you publish the following suggestions
from me upon the subject:
I spoke at Chapin some days ago before
the Farmers' Union upon the consolidation
of the two counties of 1 exirgton
and Richland into one under
tbe Act of the General Assembly pru
vided in such cases. I heard no opposition
to the scheme on that occasion,
but ou the other hand much in favor
of my speech. In fact, I have heard
very little of any opposition to it from
anywhere.
1 beg to say row that election being
; over and the minds of the people are
at rest the movement will go lorward.
. The scheme, with politicians out of
' the way, will be passed upon by the
voles of the people. I have . said before,
and I repeat now, that consolidation
is the only solnti n of Lexington
. county. Ker dismemberment is cerr
tain from the court house. A<* it
stands now the balance of the Dutch
!, Fork will come to Ii;chland in annex
. atiou, New Brookland will come, also.
Batesburg and Leesviile, with large
J territory, will go to Saluda. Swansea
f has already cut 210 square miles
, of Lexington county cutting her
. nearly half in two. Wagener wants
j 100 square miles in new county. These
I movements are now on foot, so that it
r is clearly seen that old Lexington is
doomed. By consolidation we can
5 spare to Batesburg and Leesville such
territory as wish to go to them in a new
county and county seat, and to Swansea
all that they may need in new
county and still meet the requirements
of the Constitution. These remote
I sections are not so much desired by
' Columbia in her enlargement and
western spreading as the territory
within say twenty miles of the city,
so that the people tn those remote sections
shall have their new counties and
the balance of the connty will be
greatly -advanced and developed by
the western growth of oar, the great
capital city. Columbia wants the section
within twenty miles of her gates
for healty suburban homes for settlers
which will be opened cp by good
roads in wagons and automobiles and
trolley lines. A main street will go
to Lexington Court House and that
town will soon become a big city.
The vote in the election will be npon
the question of "consolidation" and
the "name of the new county" and
the "location of the county seat."
I appeal to the people to consider
the matter and pat themselves in line
of action with this grand scheme of
progress and advancement and prosperity.
% Respectfully,
N. W. Brooker.
