He Lexington Dispatch Wednesday, Nov (3, 1912. G 31. Habman, Editor and Publisher J. W. Ogilvie, Assistant Editor Entered at tne Post Office at Lexington, S. 0., as second class matter . CIRCULATION 2.300. Won't it be funny to see the Republicans in Congress take a back seat after the 4th of March? Senator Tillman, so they say, is booked for the chairmanship of the Senate committees on naval affairs and appropriations. There are many white electors in South Carolina, who would vote the National Republican ticket were the negro eliminated from politics. A movement is on foot by Columbians to induce President-elect Wilson to spend a portion of each year in that city.oocnpying the residence where he passed his boyhood days. He might go further and fare worse. VOL. XLIII. Last week The Dispatch entered upon its forty-third volume aDd the editor takes thi9 opportunity to thank the people of Lexington f-r the liberal patronage and kindness extended to the paper and to himself personally during these long years. Our relations with the people of Lexington have been pleasant indeed and we have shared together the sunshine as weit as the shadows, which must fall across the pathway of us all in our journey from the cradle to the grave. We are pleased to state that the business of the Dispatch has all along been Yery satisfactory, and wTe are looking forward to the time when we can arrange so as to giv* the people a better paper than it ha- ever been. CHARESTON'S GALA WEEK. The Charleston County Fair will open its gates in C barlesfcon at the first stroke of 9 o'clcr < on the morning of November 18 it we are to judge from the pubn-^d accounts of the -elaborate p"-i> coitions for the successfully bringi:?4 this fair, its success is -already a.od. There are so many big feat urr -? on the programme that it is a difficult matter to single oat any of them as being especially prominent. Band concerts, horse racing, vaudeville entertainments, oat door amusements, industrial, commercial and agricultural .exhibits, exhibits of wo man's work, horse cattle and poultry shows, amateur field athletics, children's features, free amusement extractions, automobile show. Added to these are the numerous entertainments that the Central Civic committee has provided for the Fleet of United States battleships which will visit Charleston -on this occasion, for which City Connoil appropriated $15,000 in addition to the large private subscriptions, ar 1 even then it will give you but a faint idea of what Charleston folk have in store for those who visit the City by the Sea during this time or Hilarious fan and frolic. Then again there is the joint army and navy parade, with 10,000 men inline. Qo and see Charleston in all her glory is the best advice that we can give. THE CAUSE? THE BEMEDY. Alduring last summer and fall we were j surprised and somewhat astonished to notice the unusual number of cases of sickness and deaths reported in the papers from Lexington, and often wondered concerning the reason for such a deplorable state of affairs. We knew that the healthfulnesa ofc Lexington had passed into proverb; that the natural drainage of the town was unsurpassed by any other town no matter where located, and that its deep wells furnished pure water free from the contaminations of disease breeding microbes deleterious to health, and could find no reason for the prevalence of so many cases of typhoid fever and other diseases foreign to our climate. Since our return we have been looking around to discover if we could the reason for the epidemic and the cause for it is no longer a matter of wonder. Lexington has made many improvements; its growth has been almost phenomiual along the lines of property improvements and population. There are more and be'ter homes, which grea .iy ad Is to the refinement, culture and hap; ines9 of home environment, and shoul i encourage a healthy condition ?.f body and mind. Modern places <f bmi ie9s have taken the places of the shells which met the requirements cf business in the days that have go >e. Considerable attention seems to bav; been given to the promotion of 'he mor?l, religious and educational interests of Lexington. INew churches - have been erected n winch to worship the JNiosi High God; a school house second to none in beauty of architecture and convenience of arrangement stands as a monument to the enterprise and progressivene^s of Lexington people upon a hill overlooking the town like a sentinel guarding it from the inroads of ignorance and her handmaid vice in all its hideous forms. Other improvements of more or less importance can be seen in the various departments of life. But strange to remark that as nu merous as the changes in the pbysica conditions of Lexington have been apparenly but little or no attention hai been given to sanitary conditions. Ar increase in population demands i strict enforcement of the laws o! hygene and sanitation. And in th< failure to make ttie9e laws apply tc the changed conditions lies the root o: the evil?the fruitful cause of sicknes; and a fat graveyard. Tin cans, trasl debris of all kinds should not be al lowed to accumulate arouud public oi private premises, but should be re moved at least once a week by a scavenger cart to be furnished for this pur pose by the town authorities. Partic ular attention should be given t( < water cl03ets. They should be thor oughly cleansed - and disinfected, anc there are many other things thai should be done to preserve the public health. An ounce of prevention ialways worth a pound of cure. Clerk's Sale. The State of South Carolina, County of Lexington. In theCourt of Common Pleas. Martha J.
