Newberry Observer.
How a pokeberry stalk cost a farrfier
about a thousand dollars was related
yesteiday to the Observer man by Mr.
M. W. Oxner, of Kinards, one of the
best farmers of Newberry and Laurens
counties. Some years ago, before
he knew as much about farming as he
knows now, he had a large field of fine
cotton. In the midst of the field was
an immense pokeberry stalk, one of
the largest he ever saw. It did not
occur to him that there was any danger
it; but noticed one day that the
cotton 9talbs on one side of the stalk
began to turn red. Then they began
to shrivel up and dwarf and he examined
them to see what was the matter.
He found the red spider on the under
side of the leaves. The blight continued
to spread until he thinks the field
was so badly injured that he lost at
east twenty bales. He found that the
Dig pokeberry 9talk was the starting
point of the pests, and since then he
lever lets a pokeberry stalk grow anywhere
in or about his fields.
Mr. Oxner has not been bothered
:hi9 year by the spider, but one of his
leighbors, Mr. Andrew Johnson, has.
\lr. Johnson has got rid of them by a
nethod all his own. When he sees
he signs of the red spider in his cot,011
he takes a tin pan of kerosene oil
tnd a short broom and goes into the

he stalks over so that the kerosene

Irs. Arsene Ouellette, a bride of a few

At Chicago the Rev. Wm. White
Wilson, 55 years oid, for 23 years rector
of St. Marks Episcopal church, was
instantly killed by a street car Friday
night. The crew of the car will be
held pending the coroner's inquest.
