Mr. Caughman Presents
His Platform.
To the Democratic Voters of Lexington
County:
On account of the very limited time
given the candidates for county supervisor
duriug the campaign, which has
made it impossible to discuss issues
and present our claims, I take this
method of giving you an opportunity
to learn of some of the things I stand
for; and which, if elected, I shall
endeavor to put into effect.
First. I stand for an honest and
economical administration of the
county's affairs; and I shall strive at
all times to run the government on
the lowest possible basis consistent
with good service.
Second. I am in favor of operating
a truck farm on tho county's plantation
at the poor house. Instead of
raising cotton I believe in growing Irish
potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips,

nsed on tlie chaingang to feed the convicts
and stock. In this way I am
satisfied that hundreds of dollars
could be saved the taxpayers every
year, and the expenses cut down to
an appreciable degree.
Third. To further economize I am
in favor of disposing of the saddlehorse
and milch cow on the chaingang,
and am unalterably opposed to raiging
large numbers of hogs on the chaingang
at the present high prices of feed
stuffs?at at the expense of the general
taxpayers. I firmly believe that if
yon elect me yoar supervisor I will be
able to cut the expenses of the chaingang
almost one-half.
Fourth. I am in favor of keeping
up the roads by contract after the
chaingang has put them in proper condition.
This is the only way, in my
opinion, that the roads can be kept up
at a nominal cost.
Fifth. I am in favor of giving each
township in the county?whether that
township be in the rich and thickly
settled Dutch Fork or the remotest
part of the sand hills?its prorata share
of the chaingang's work, as the law
provides. I can promise nothing more
than to see that the law in this particular
i9 carried out to the letter.
Sixth. I wish to correct a wrong
impression which has gone out among
the people of the county to the effect
that in holding the position of county j
commissioner I have been signing the <
many "extravagant claims" that have ;
been paid off. As a matter of fact, a j
J commissioner has absolutely nothing
to do with signing claims, and during
the four years I have been on the
board I have not signed a single claim.
In conclusion, I wish to thank the
good people of Lexington county for j
the confidence they have always reposed
in me in the past. My public
and private life is before you, it is an
open book; and if yon see fit to elect
me your supervisor on next Tuesday,
I assure you that I will give you the
best service of which my experience,
my head and my heart are capable.

Serious sickness in my family has
prevented me from attending the regular
appointments of the Executive
Committee. For this reason I have
been unable to meet many of the
people.
It was with great reluctance that I
consented to enter the race for the
legislature, I wa9 importuned by
many good people in many different
places in the county, but not until
my own home people said I mu9t
offer, did I yield.
The probability now is that I will
not get out any more before the people.
Generally, however, the people
know my competency, but I am sorry
that I have not been able to meet the
people and giye them a chance to ask
me about the issues before U3. I staDd
today a9 I have for 25 years, the exponent
of economy. ][ have practiced
iii my home life, advocated in all public
places, and shall endeavor to do
so in the 9tate, if the people decide I
shall go to the house.
Being very grateful to all my friends,
and assuring them that, though not
neglecting my present duties, I shall
use my best endeavor to represent the
people of my county, if elected. I
leave the election in your hands, having
confidence that the people will do
what is best.
