The gates of twelve cotton cloth :
manufacturing plants in New Bedford, t
Mass., were closed last week and thir- 1
teen thousand operatives were idle 1
because of the strike of weavers and <
lbom fixers for the abolition of the j
grading system of payment. 1
Determined efforts were made to ex- 1
tend the strike to seven other corpora- s

What a Girl Expects of
a Man.
In the August Woman's Home Companion
appears an article entitled
"What a Girl Expects of a Man.'' It
is written by Anne Bryan McCall, and
an extract follows:
"First, she wants strength of body;
not that strength of body which the
primitive woman demanded, by which
yon could knock do vvn an adversary,
but that better, more modern fashion
of bodily strength which we call
health, the soundness of body which
bespeaks temperate living, clean thinking,
healthy instincts; not the strong
body that can break, so much as the
healthy body which can bend to meet
and deal with the varied and difficult
conditions of modern life. It even
pleases her if you sail a boat well,
dance well, ride well, play tennis well;
not because these things are especially
desirable in themselves, but because
they express to her newly the old
strength of body in some gracious and
desirable form.
"Then she wants temperateness,
and good sense, and trustworthiness,
and broad-mindednes9, and fair-mindedness.
Here i9 the old strength of
intellect that she has always desired,
but refined and altered into something
better. To understand what I mean
by these things being manifestations
of a strong intellect, compare with
such strength the mental weakness of
the man who is unjust, passionate,
lull, blundering, a slave to hi9 temper,
led in bonds by his prejudices, changeable,
unreliable, variable, unfair; for
svery one of these things is a form of
mental weakness. The man strong intellectually
has none of these weakae
ses.
"And with honor I shall include
courtesy, that thing so dear to the
aeart of every woman. And I shall call
pour attention to the fact that courtesy,
:rue courtesy, is perhaps the finest
lower or ail morn strengcn. as a
nan's moral strength deepens, his
jourtesy grows. Courtesy is at bottom
lust dindness, and he is always most
rind who has the strongest sense of
;he rights of others and the deedest
sense of honor toward himself.
