French View of Marriage.
In the August American Magazine,
W. J. Locke, writing a story, makes
one of his characters 9ay:
"A Frenchman and an Englishman
or American view marriage from entirely
different angles. The AngloSaxon
of honest instinct's, attracted
toward a pretty girl, at once thinks of
the possibilities of marriage; if he
finds them infinitely remote, he makes
romantic love to her in the solitude of
his walks abroad or of his sleepless
nights, and, in her presence, is as
dumb and dismal as a freshly hooked
trout. The equally honest Gaul doesn't
do anything of the kind. The attraction
in itself is a stimulus to adventure.
He makes love to her, ju9t because

Adam to make love to a preity daugh
ter of Eve. He lives in the present.

A negro hoy seven years old w as
run over and killed by a train on the
Atlantic Coast Line on Tuesday at
Congtree, Richland county.

Saluda Standard.
Bub Henderson, who liyes near Saluda
and travels around over the coun
try fixing machines, etc., swore out a
warrant last week for Bud Pressley,
who had been working with him. He
claims that Pressley had stolen $30
from him and left. Sheriff Sample
went to Westminister, Oconee county,
Thursday and brought Pressley back
to Saluda Friday and lodged him in
jail.
It is said that Pressley had been living
with Lona Henderson, a daughter
of Bub Henderson, for some years,
but that he has a wife living in Walhalla.
On being asked by Sheriff Sample
if he were not married to the Henderson
woman, Pressley said that he
was not and showed a contract that
oV?a Vi*d sicmed to do anv work that he
might require of her for 99 years for
the sum of $1. It is said that the purpose
of this contract "was to prevent
his being brought up and tried for
adultery.
All the parties concerned are white.

Congressman Joe Johnson of Spartanburg
was robbed of his pocketbook
containing $70 and some small change

My dear Mr. Editor:
Feeling that the people of the county
are entitled to some explanation of
my absence from the campaign meetings,
I ask yon to state for me that
we are in the closing days of a very
important ssseion of Congress, and
ohose who have any experience in legislative
procedure know how important
it is for members of such a body
to be at their posts of duty at such a
time.
I have quite a number of bills of
great importance, some of my own an
thorship and others from the Committee
of which I am a member, that
are still unacted upon, and I feel that
I should remain here and look after
these matters rather than come home
and spend my time in the campaign,
thus neglecting the duties devolved
upon me by the people of the district.
As soon as we adjourn, I shall hasten
home and give the people of the district
an account of my stewardship
