North Eaisto, S. C. Mr. Editor:?In. looking over the campaign in our State it appears to a countryman that we were in a tight place when our Chief Justice had to abdicate to serve us. And I would ask from what to save us ? Has not the affairs of State gone on as usual ? Our credit is as good as ever, our laws arc enforced as heretofore. The main issue seems to be the pardoning and paroling. As to this, did not our W ?? + ri/\rTOnnA*i? CO \7 in 1 C piUSUiili UU VCH1W.I lli lilC WVWI44A that half the people who were convicted 9hould not have been ana half were cleared 9hoaid have been convicted? If this assertion was even part y correct I cant see why such a clamor should arise over his acts.^ Added to this, is it not a cardinal principle that;, it is better for ninetynine guilty persons to go free than for one innocent man to be punished. It looks somewnat arragant in Mr. Jones to appear as a man who wishes Bimply to get another feather in his cap. It was said after the campaign two years ago that the vicious element wa9 in control of the State while the fact remains that our common mother got on as usual. So it seems there is not much difference between the rule of the vicious or the virtuous: Yours for fair play. J. F. Lyles. Ohio Mail Weds His j Son's Widow. John C. Baird, sixt>-three yean old.
