Shepherd, j News Notes From Peak. Peak, March 21 -To-day at 5 o'clock p. m. is the first mail we haye had since last Saturday. Without the whistling of the locomotives our vicinity is comparatively dead. We have had a very full river, within 2% feet as full as our last big freshet. The railroad suffered a great de*l, many big washouts, and trestles carried away, and big force of hands have been and are still at work repairing. Damage to bridges, roads, fences andstock has been very heavy. One of our ^airfield neighbora (Mr. Tarboro) lost JO head of cattle out of 21, and others lost heavily. I heard the turtle dove and copped red bird holler this morning, together with the old familiar note of "gee haw." The roads are very bad, almost impassable. Our dear old friend, Luther Mayer, "whose host at mine house is always nalAAma 'I has the srood of his neigh WO<WU4V) ? ^ . bora, as well as the stranger, at heart He is dragging the highway and putting a good distance of roadbed in good condition. Lather is clever from his feet to the top of his head, and deserves credit for the deed. We fear the settlings from the high water will canse much sickness np and down old Broad river.
