Moody Battle Waged at Windsor Aiken, March 10.?Windsor, in th:8 eonntv. was the scene of a blood* bat ble last eight, in which Hanford Cash- ! man was killed and three others were ' severely woanded by the town officers, and John Cleckley chief of police, sus bained more or less serious injuries, v Cleckley and his assistant, L. B Johnson, are in the Aiken county jail and John OuBose, Smiley Randall and Jet Atkinson are held in the Windsor Lockup. The injured are Aleck Nun, shot in the arm; George Weatherford, shot in the leg; Sweet Cushman, brother of the dead man, shot through the hand, rhe fight, which was general, seem9 to have grown out of "an attempt to intimidate the officer, John Cleckley, who was formerly a member of the police force in Aiken, anftfor the past fear, since Windsor wa9 incorporated and a branch dispensary located there, ias been town marshal of Windsor, rhreats have been made, it is alleged, bo drive him away from the town be3au8e of hi9 activity in maintaining law and order, and last night the brouble began when, between 8 and 9 y clock, the officer heard a shot fired in Jet Atkinson's butcher shop. Going: *iito the shop'Cleckley found i crowd gathered and saw something ?la9h as it fell into a tub of water. Thinking it was a weapon that some me had thrown away, he made a >earch tor it but without success, then lemanded to know who fired the shot. Se arrested Atkinson, whose sons were present, and it is said, declared that ;heir father should not be taken into custody without a fight. Outside the 3oor on the street the fight began as Bleckley led Atkinson away toward the town lockup, and no one will ever inow how many shots were fired. There was a fusiiade which brought Dleckley's assistant, L. B. Johnson, fcn anpnto tn hftln his chief, and an jther fusilade followed, and when the smoke had cleared away Hanford C. Oushman, who is familiarly known as "Son,''lay dead and the others who were shot were nursing their wonnds. The combatants not only used their zuns but brought knives into play, bleckley sustaining several severe cuts in the arm and face and head. He md his assistant, however, made wholesale arrests, locking John Dubose, Smiley Randall and Jet Atkinson in bhe Windsor jail before coming to Aiken, where they are being held pending an investigation.
