Our Opportunity.
Every person in Lexington and surrounding
country, irrespective of
church affiliations, should attend the
big mass meeting in the court house
next Monday eight in the interest of
the I Lutheran College for Women.
This college is going to be established
ni some point in South Carolina, the
location to be decided by the general
committee which meets in the city of
Oeluuibfa on March 5, next.
That Lexington i9 the logical point
Tor this college is conceded on every
band; bat it will take more than this

to secure the school, it 19 K?mg i"
take money, and it is going to take
hard work and honest effort. The people
of the entire coanfcy should join in
the movement that has been launched
1>J our citizens to secure this college. I
Of course, the burden should, and naturally
will, rest upon the people of the
court house, who can ill afford to let
this opportunity pass. From a busi- I
sees standpoint, the question should
he considered. It would mean the expoadittu?
of thousands of dollars annually
right here in "Lexington; it
would bring to LeSdhgton a number of
1afe*bitants from every part of the
country; it would enhance the value
of property to an appreciable degree.
In the face of these facts, can we as
' patriotic citizens afford to sit idly by

cited institution?
With between forty and fifty Lutheran
congregations within a radius of
twelve miles of Lexington, it is not
unreasonable to suppose that these
hundred^ of families would likewise
. benefitted; for all of them have
3psi8 to educate?to send off to school
?to college?and to them it would
mean a saving of hundreds of dollars.

that it is not confined to. the

lioped that all will respond. In an
undertaking like this every little

Honorable Robert R. Reynolds, a
leading attorney of Asheville, N. C.,
was one of Columbia's visitors last
week for a day in the Capitol City on
business in the Federal Court. Mr.
Reynolds enjoys the distinction of being
the youngest Solicitor in the North
State, and further being the only
Democratic Solicitor ever elected in
his district. In a district highly Republican
he was last year elected by
an overwhelming majority, leading
the ticket by many hundreds of votes
in every county. A young man of exce
>tional striking appearance, fluent
an I commanding address. He has
placed himself before the public eye in
a most creditable manner, and is now
a candidate for the United States Congress
from the Tenth North Carolina
District. If elected, he will be the
youngest man in the House of Representatives
at Washington.
Ex-United States Senator John L.
McLaurin is quoted as saying that he
would enter the race for governor
should Blease veto the State Ware- ,
house bill. That Mr. McLaurin is one
of the brainiest men the State has

the State who would welcome the opportunity
of yoting for him again, especially
for the office of governor.

dragging allowed - in a court oyer
which he presides. The State needs
more men like George E. Prince.

Those teachers who failed to hear
the address of Dr. S. 3. Mitchell, delivered
before the County Teachers'.
Association on Saturday, missed a
rare treat. Dr. Mitchell is one of the
very strongest men in the educational
world and an honor to South Carolina.
Every farmer in Lexington county
should ^attend the live stock meeting
here next Saturday, the 24th. This is
a matter in which our people,' it is
hoped, will take a deeper interest this
year than ever before.
With J. Wm. Thurmond as campaign
manager for Ira B. Jones, the
race for governor between Blease and
Jones will doubtless be a spicy one.
Many candidates have already an- j
nounced for the various offices in several
counties of the State. Lexington j
politics, however, have not as yet be- j
gan to boil. .
The legislature has had a hard time
trying to hold the governor down, but
in most instances they have succeeded
allright.
Now is the opportune time to do
something for your town and county
by subscribing to the fund to secure
the Lutheran college for women.

their work than ever before known in
this county, doe to the continued bad

The Lutheran Female college will
enhance the value of your property at
least one hundred per cent. Had you

Mrs. Ephralm Croat Dead.
Mrs. Ephraim Crout died at her
home near Rehobath church, in Saluda
county, yesterday morning at 6 o'clock
after an illness of about two weeks,
aged 75 years. She leaves two sons,
two daughters and a'devoted husband
to mourn their loss. One of her sons,
Prof. W. S. Crout, is the efficient as
I sistant teacher in the *Delmar High
school. Her remains were laid to rest
at 10 o'clock today.
