This massage was received yesterdaj
by a local piano house from an "up
river" purchaser whose $500 instrument
had been forwarded via Mississippi
river, steamboat.
In its usual pine box the piano waE
installed in the lower deck next to a
lanky, sleepy looking mule bound for
the cotton fields of the upper bends.
Although provided with plenty of oats
and hay the mule ripped off a portion
of the piano box, disposed of six octa|
ves of black apd white ivory keys and
ran the chromatic scale up to "G" in
the treble clef. He had gnawed away
t^e mahogany panels in front, masticated
felt dampers and hammers by
the dozens and completely wrecked
the melodious "instrument.
"Steamboat Bill," stoking a boiler
20 feet away said the mule "must have
had his foot on the soft pedal," as he
did not hear a note.
When discovered the animal was
unconcernedly gazing longingly across
the river at a grass covered levee.
It will cost $330 to repair the piano.

Notice, Pension Board.
The Pension Board will meet in the
County Auditor's office on the first
Monda3 in January, 1912, at 12 o'clock
for the purpose of organizing. The
old board will serve. Geo. W. Reeder
wiu serve as a new xuemucr.
The Pension Commissioner will be
in the Auditor's office on each Saturday
in January, 1912, to give out
blanks to each applicant. All applicants
must appear in person, except
in very extreme cases. Further instructions
will be given when applicants
apply for-blanks. The County
Pension Board will meet on the first
Monday in February, 1912, to pass
upon all applications that were handed
in to the Commissioner After this
date no blanks will be given out.
The representatives aDd others are
requested to send to the commissioner
the names of all pensioners who have
died or moved out of the county since
the last pension roll was paid. Please
give this information, otherwise their
names will be on the roll and cases
considered,

to the assessment and taxation of
real and personal property, the Auditor,

All male persons are subject to poll
tax from 21 to 60 years of age, except
those exempt by law. Under the new
law all male persons are subject to
commutation road tax. except those
exempt by law or are residents of incorporated
towns where 6treet dues
are paid.
All dogs are subject to a capitation
tax ot 50 cents, and must be returned
at the same time other property is returned.

Obituary.
Mary C. Clemens, wife of J. B.
Clemens, died December 81, 1911, and
t was buried on Tuesday, January 2, in
Shiloh cemetery of which church she
was a faithful member, the Rev. C. S.
r
Felder conducting the funeral. She
was 67 years, 1 month and 26 days old,
and leaves besides her husband, three
daughters, one sbn and eight grandchildren,
three sisters and two broth\
era, together with a large circle of
] other relatives and friends.
A loved one from us is gone,
i A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.

Obituary.
Charlotte Charity, daughter of
George and Nancy Caughman, died
January 2nd, 1912, at the ripe age of
83 years, 11 months and 19 days.
She was baptized in infancy, and in
early youth was confirmed in St.
John's E. L. Church, afterwards transferred
to Pisgah E. L. Church, and
from there to St. Peters' E. L. Church,
to which she remained a faithful and
consistent member until called to her
eternal home, where, we believe, she
has an inheritance with the saints in
ligbt. .
Her remains were laid to rest at St.
Peters by her pastor.
