HOKE ISREVERSED
Sandy Bend's Solon Humiliated,
but Defiant.
STORY OF A BAD MAN.
How Justice Temporarily Miscarried In
the Case of Tarantula Jim Versus
Joe Biff and an Ornament of the
Bench and Bar Was BamL ozled.
By M. QUAD.
[Copyright. 1911. by Associated Literary
Press.]
FOR ten minutes previous to opening
court Judge Hoke sat in
bis place with a look of sor|
row on his face and sighs es
caping from his lips at intervals. It
was evident that he was laboring under
strong mental emotion. It was a
long minute after the crier had made
his cry that his honor looked around
the room and said:
"This 'ere court as a court is ashamed
to look you in the face. This 'ere
court as Tom Hoke, owner of the Red
Dog saloon, spent a good share of last
night kicking hisself around the graveyard.
"For fifteen long years Tom Hoke has
been the high peg in this town of
Sandy Bend. His Red Dog saloon has
Tye pbunk bah'&s of human gobe!'
kept the best liquors, and his poker
rooms have given the squarest deals,
lie's had to kill seven men in (hn^
time, but in every case the eo;:on:;'
has complimented him on his shooting

Where honor is lost nil Is lost.
"You all remember the case of Joe
Biff versus Tarantula Jim. I sent Joe
to the pen for five years for highway
robbing Jim. He appeals to a higher
court and gets the decision reversed
on me. and I# am directed to giTe bira a
new trial.
"My friends, go back with me a year.
It is a perfect full day. The birds are
singing and the byotes yelping, and
every critter in tfandy Bend is n-thanking
heaven that he's alive and kicking.
As lie dwells on the thought that

the Red Dog, has seen many, many

j them. He has had years of experience
j in sizing up human critters. J'm say
ing this, and I'm saying that I'd have
bet the Red Dog agin' an army mule
that Tarantula was the worst of the lot..
"I hain't saying that any of us trembled
in his presence, but we was rather
careful in addressing hire, and we
didn't win from him in poker beyond
a certain point. We gineralJy agreed
with him in all he said, and if there

ready to admit, like the true gentleman
he is, that he's more'n half kyote.
He hain't got but one sound lung, and
he's cockeyed in the left eye.
"Joe is over to Wild Cat hill on his
i aim. He's got a lame back and is
laying off work. On a sartin day Tarantula
Jim comes a-cavorting that way
to yell at somebody and keep his reputashun
at the head of the class. He
sees Joe. and he draws a long breath
and yells. That 'ere yell was heard
two miles and stampeded 3,000 steers.
It made Bald mountain tremble. It
split bowlders as big as a house. It
made trees bend as if a hurricane was
raging.
"That 'ere yeil was gelled to skeer
Joe Biff out of his shirt and leave him
a naked corpse. Did it do it? Not by
a durn sight. He didn't move a leg.
He didn't bat an eye. It was only
when a second yell came that he picked
up his gun and asks of Tarantula:
"'What's the coinmoshun?'
" 'I'm Tarantula Jim!'
"What of it?'
" 'I've druuk barfs of human gore!
I've eat tons of human flesh! I've'?
"Jim paused right thar, my friends.
He paused bekase Joe's gun kivered
him. aud Joe kindly asked hira to dismount
and give that cayuse a rest.
"Jim got down. Not auofher yell:
not a gun drawn.
The Rout.
"When he was down he was turned
to head for the Ilend and then given
the triad foot Yes. ye gods of the wild
and woolly west, be sot the boot and
started off oil the run! He arrives here
panting like a man with four aces in
his hand and $.r>00 in the pot. He tells
me that he's been highway robbed, and
he yells for justice. It was a busy day
at the Red Dog. but I puts thirty customers
aside and writes out a warrant
for Joe Biff and sends out the constable.
"At the trial Tarantula piles it on.
but Joe jest sets and grins and makes
no defense. On the evidence I have to
send him to prison, but he goes grinning.
He has something up bis s)eeve.
If I'd known what I know now he'd
hare been patted on the back. The
higher court says I must reverse andgive
him a new trial. Higher court be
hanged! There won't be no new trial,
bekase Joe Biff stands here to be iooked
upon as a hero and to be told that
his drinks at the Red Dog for the next
year won't cost him a cent and bekase
Tarantula Jim has fled tbo Bend and
?'will be'seen among us no more. He
wasn't robbed IIo was simply kicked.
