Clemson Letter.
Knowing of the prevailing low price
of cotton seed, we have asked Prof.
T. E. Keitt, of the Experiment Staff,
to prepare the following letter which
will be of special interest to the farmers.
A question of some concern to the'
farmer at this season of the year is
what disposition shall be made of his |
cotton seed.
They can be either rolled in acid
phosphate, crushed, or composted to
prevent sprouting and applied directly
as a fertilizer; they can be exchrnged
for cotton seed meal; they can be
sold and the farmer may or may not
reinvest iD fertilizers. The question
| to be decided is which is most profitable
? The fertilizing value of a ton
of cotton seed, using present relative
commercial values is $li.l8. When
| this ton of seed is manufactured the
products and fertilizer values will be
i approximately as follows: Cotton
I seed oil 250 lbs,, no fertilizer value;
cotton seed hulls, 978 lbs", 1.12 fertilizer
value; 22 lbs., 0.03 fertilizer
value. There would be some additional
agricultural value in the furnishing
of organic matter for decay, but this
is not large when we consider that 15
bushels would furnish less than a good
i peavine stubble. We note from the
figures given that most of the fertilizing
elements are contained in the portion
that goes to make up the meal.
The present selling price is $17.00
per ton and the rate of exchange is
about 1,400 lbs. of meal per ton. The
value of this meal reckoning it as
, 2-7-1 Yi is $16.36, but it must be rej
membered that these relative comtner
j rial values are net made up to repreI
sent retail prices, but to show values
! which are relative amons; themselves.
Taking the selling price of meal as
$25.00 per ton, then, 1,400 lbs. would
cost $17.50. If the swap is made some
of the seed should be sold out-right to
j purchase acid phosphate and potash to
I mix with meal ana make a balanced
| fertilizer or else these materials should
I be bought and mixed with the meal.
| For information relative to mixing
! fertilizers at home ,write for Bulletin
| 151 of the S. C. Expt. Station. 1
