The Broad river br d ft was made -'free" Saturday afternoon. The bridges were purchased- from private interests at a combined cost of 190,000. The Gervais street bridge over the Congaree cost $60,000 and for the Broad river structure $30,000 was paid. An act of the legislature authorized Columbia :x>wnship to issue bonds not exceeding $75,000, while Lexington county arranged for $20,000 a/'lili f-?nn a1 m nnpv UV4VU(/lViiU4 iUUUVJ The Broad river bridge wa9 chartered in 1824 and the Gervais or Congaree river bridge in 1828. Both the original bridges were burned by Gen. Wade Hampton and afterward rebuilt. The commission that arranged the purchase of the bridges was as follows: Messrs. W. G. Childs, chairman; J. W. Miller, for $2,375. Tract No. 2, containing 90 acres, was bought by N. S. Croat, for $1,825. Tract No. 3, containing 126 acres, . _ was bought by E. 8. Grout for $875. Tract No. 4, the home place, 49 acrs, was bought by Mrs. O&roline Crout for $1,390. In the case of J C. Busbee, at. al., against J. P. Lucas, et. al., 292 acres, was bought by T. H. Caughman, for $3,150. In the case of J. Ed. Shealy, at. al., against Robert Fortner and others, 120 acres, sold, for partition, was purchased by J. Ed Shealy, for $700. In the case of Dr. E. P.
