train No. 55 last night about 11:25
o'clock between the block office at
Royster, just sourh of Columbia and
Lower str* et, the southern boundary
of the city. The robber held H. L.
' M redith, the mail clerk, and his ne
gro helper, B S. Dreher, at the point
of a pistol and took possession of the
registered mail. X"en he pulled or.
the emergency brake and leaped off
the train jast before' it reached the
crossing at the corner of Whaley and
Sumter streets.
It is impossible to 9tate the value of
the registered packages crorten by the
robber, but it is beiieved that they are
worth thousands ot d >llars.
For boldness ar.d daring, the rob

Soon after the train egan to move, j
a masked man threw open the ront \
door of the mail car, the second from

After he got possession of the pouch

sorted over the package taking the
