In Retrospect.
Seems to me tbe years go faster thaD
they did in times gone by;
When they used to creep at snail'space,
now they seem to fairly fly.
Weeks like day9 and dajTs like hours,
and the clockhands fairly race
As they make their daily journeys
'round the old clock's solemn face.
Evening shadows eytr crowding on
the glowing lights nf dawn;
owmonn hrnfttiriflr crA

the twilight gray is gone.
Yes, the sands of life run faster, run
along at rapid rate
When a fellow's hair is graying and
he passes forty-eight.
Forty-eight! And drawing closer to
the grim half century mark;
Silver sheen that shines so clearly in
the hair once deeply dark;
Little crowsfeet slowly spreading,
deepening wrinkles o'er the face?
All a proof that time is flying at a
swift, relentless pace.
Growing love or peace and quiet in
the sweet confines of home;
Gone the old unrest that led me in
days gone to widely rjam.
So the changes come upon me,
changes slow hut growing great,
And I realize the difference one can
feel at forty-eight.
Forty-eight.' Mere years in number?
what care I how swift they go?
Every one has brought me blessings
not all men can claim to know;
Love and home and happy children,
sweet companion by my side;
Creature comforts without number as
adown life,s stream we glide.
And I hear the ringing laughter of my
children as they play,
Feel the handclasp of life's comrade
as we pass along the way.
And I thank God for my blessings,
thank Him for my rich estateHome
and love and happy childrenyoung
at heart at forty-eight!

' CONGRESS FIXES
PRICE OF COTTON.
*
Resolved That Farmers Must Hold for
! 15 Cents.
| Montgomery, Ala. September 13.?
Five hundred farmers, and as many
bankera, Congressmen, United States
Senators and business men, representing
every cotton growing State in
America, declared in Convention to5
day that the farmers' cotton is worth
1 15 cents a pound, and resolved that the
farmer should hold his cotton for that
pr-ce. The resolution followed acom'
mittee report that the crop in America
would not exceed 12,500,000 bales.
For financing ihe crop of this year,
a resolution was adopted to the effect
that the farmer should deposit his cot
ton in a warehouse and use Lis receipt
I us collateral until he could sell his cot
1
ron at not less than 15 cents, mere |
was also a resolution urging that the
9evarel State Legislatures should provide
for a system of bonded warehouses.
Declaring that organization among the
farmers, and co-operation among them
with the bankers and financiers, was
the solution of the problem, the Convention
resolved itself into a permanent
organization, to be known as the
Southern Cotton Congress, and ad
journed to meet in Atlanta at the call
of the president, E. J. W tson, commissioner
of agriculture of South Caro
Una.
The meeting in Montgomery is to be
followed by a similar Convention in
every Southern State, to be called by
the commissioner of agriculture of each
State. By thepe conventions the ac
tion of the Congress is to be ratified
and reinforced by further steps toward
securing a better price for cotton.
