Every healthy mfndetl man or wo ruin loves a mystery, and, fortunately .'or the world, history has provided me or two problems which have beeD worn threadbare without revealing :beir secrets. Among these is the fate >f the nine-year-old son of Louis XVI. md Marie Antoinette, which Mme. Louise Latour recently dealt with in i lecture Id London. A child judicially murdered or else jpirited away, another substituted for lim to die and to be buried under a 'atee name, the people who reported of Jiese things sileuced or poisoned, the )eriod of events comparatively recent -the story sounds incredible, but it ests on a basis of established fact The dauphin, a delicate child of nine, woe. eonnnrufl frnm h1<J mothpr Mild <T UO JtUiVHU 4* V4M . ? .w .. In the evenng a child ifa bed was shown to the emissaries of the convention, and the lext^morning be\ was removed to a ;maller room with the door nailed up. :be only air coming in by the grille hrougb which his food was passed. 5o he remained until he became so ill iiat Dr. Dessault, who had often been :o Versailles in tbp old days, was sum???an/1 Him nnrl wnn nmn/wl iiUUCU IV UllCUU u*?u MUM .. find a scrofulous and* dying boy. **Ce n'est pas. le petit dauphinr That Is not the little Dauphin!"') he )fiirted out imprudently, and a day or two later be died by poison. Other doctors were brought who were unacquainted with the royal cbilIren, and the child died and was bured In bis assumed character. He is generally supposed to hare been a lad called Gombeau. and his mother was ictually seen by people in America, where she admitted the wickedness of bavin;* sold her dying son when she vas In a condition of extreme poverty. La femme Simon talked, but her vords were discredited by the author!Jes. who declared she was drunken tnd garrulous- Nevertheless, on her leathbed she confessed to a priest and i nurse that a substitute bad been put jq the dauphin's place. Such are the historical facts as rested by Mme. Latour. and to account tor them two theories have been deiuced, says a writer in tbe London rimes. The first, in which Mme. Latour believes, was that the dauphin was judicially murdered by Simon in the temple and the dying Gombeau put in bis place to bide the crime from the world. Of the second, that the child escaped alive from bis prison, many people are strenuous supporters. Some of them describe the course of events thus: Gombeau was brought Into the temple on the day of the demenagement In a large cardboard horse given ostensibly a9 a souvenir to the royal prisoner by the ferame Simon, while the dauphin was carried out by the woman in a big basket of dirty linen. Others declare that the prince was actually kept hidden in a garret in the temple until the substitute died, more than a year later, when he was taken out in a coffin with a false bottom, tbe body of Gombeau being burled In tbe moat This theory has bad two startling confirmations. A small coffin filled with paper and stones was actually found In the cemetery of La Madeleine, and General d'Andlgne. lmprlsoued In the temple In 181)1 and allowed to relieve the tedium of his confinement by gardening, was digging In tbe moat when he found the uncoffined skeleton of a child. But. as Mtne. Latour asked. If tbe dauphin escaped alJve Into the world, where did be go? No fewer than thirty pretenders, one a negro, at different times have declared themselves the son of Louis XVI. and Marie Antoinette. The two who attracted most disciples were the Due de Rlcbemout and "Nanndorc." With regard to the latter, it was against him that be did not come forward until be was thirty years of age and he could not speak a word of French. Mme. La tour added that he married a middle class wife | and was an excellent watchmaker, con* j sequently unlike what the belr of a roy- j al line ought to be. Obviously the speak- j er had forgotten Louis Seize and his 1 ? mnlrinn an/t monHIrifT Innkfl. yiUittlUU XVI UWMII5 UUU .s, V . The Doctor's Twins. An Irish doctor while enjoying a holiday in the country took the opportunity along with a friend to go fishing. During operations the doctor's sinker came off and was lost. Here was a dilemma?no sinker, no more fishing that day. Happy thought! He. had a bottle in his pocket The bottle was filled with water, carefully corked and sent down on its mission. After a few minutes' interval the doctor had a bite and pulled up his line at racing speed, finding a fine pair of fish, one on each hook. "Ha< doctor, twins this time," exclaimed his companion. "Yes," quoth the doctor, "and brought up on the bottle too."?Belfast Times. _ I IIII I ! Ill ???, OUT IN_GIVEAGAM I * All the News In the Gulch That's Safe to Print. I WARNINGS TO TENDERFEET.
