Card of Thanks.
To the Editor of Tbe Dispatch:
Realizing the impossibility to thank
each one personally who assisted in
my recent illness, I ask for space for
a few words of thanks. There are
times when words fail us. There are
emotions which cannot be worded
wandering in the deep recesses of the
mind?too deep for mere words. As
each I would describe my feelings
when X try to thank thoje who assisted
me in every way known to the
kill and sympathy of men.
' \ \ I shall ever remember, with a feeling
greater than graritndp, the kind
minis&ritkm s^th e skillful assistance
of Drs. Wessinger, Watson and Whafey.
And too, there was one, Miss
Riser, who ever stood by my bedside,
comforting and assisting me in my
hour of greatest pain, whom I can
never forget.
To the Woodmen of the World, to
? ' - - ' ? j f
my Kina Deign Dors at a many inenas,
I have a feeling greater than appreciation,
for their kind services-and sympathy
in my time of greatest need.
To every one who assisted me I offer
my heartfelt thanks and live with the
hope that sometime, somewhere, I
will be able to show them how folly I
have appreciated their help.
Yours truly,
Hollie L. Harman.

To Stop Hiccoughs.
Simple esses of hiccough are oil en
relieved by such mea>.ures as sucking
ice or taking salt and vinegar, says
the New "Xork Medical Journal. Failing
the tongue forward and holding it
for seme time is an effective proced- j
ure.
Sometimes obstinate hiccough is re- j

tense, have him hold his breath
as long as possible.
Sneezing is very efficient in certain
cases, since it is the exact opposite to
hiccough, being a sudden expiratoiy
act. In Plato's "Symposium" the
physician, Eryximachus, recommend- !

not relieved, to tickle his nose and
sneeze, whereupon the hiccough would
be sure to go.
Tne spelling "hiccough'' is recent,
being a combination of the sylables
"hie" and the latter term of "cough,"
which is without either physiological
or etymological basis; the pronunciation,
with, perhaps, the rarest exceptions,
is still that of the older form,
"hiccup," earlier given variously, as
"hickup," "hickupsnickap," "hickhop,"
"hickcock," and "hickett,"
with quasi diminishing n.ffixes, ock,
etc., but the "hick'' a sylable aptly
expressive of the - nodie sound
produced by the conditions giving
ri3e to the general disturbance, is
found in all references to the origin of
the term to which the writer has been {
able to obtain. The term singultus is
rarely used. x * |

IN ABSENCE.
The house is drear and dark and lone,
The kitchen and the hall,
And in the living room, I own. |
There seems no light at all;
Upstairs or down 'tis just the same,
No joy close by can sta> ?
For pleasure's blind and deaf and lame
Sin v asu e away.
The flowers in the garden sigh
And droops each pretty head;
Somebody speaks to me, and I
Must wonder what was said,
The whole place has a downcast air;
The bluest skies seem gray,
And there's one more empty chair
When mother's gone away.
I think it may be good for us
From her awhile to be;
We get a true perspective thus
And judge her rightfully,
She is the queen of all the earth,
A queen with loving sway,
Ah, well we know her sterling worth

There is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors
pronounced it a local disease and prescribed
local remedies, and by failing
to cure with local treatment, pronounced
it incurable. Science has proven
catarrh to be a constitutional disease
and therefore requires constitutional
treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured
by F. J. Cheney & Co.,
Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional
cure on the market, it is taken internally
in doses from 10 drops to a
teaspoonful. It acts directly on the
blood and mucous surfaces of the sysi.
