Winthrop College Scholarship and Entrance Examination. The examination for the award of vacant scholarships in Winthrop college and tor the admission of new students will be held at the county court house on Friday, July 7, at 9 a. m. Applicants muse be not less than titteen years of age. When scholarships are vacant after July 7 they will be awarded to those making the highest average at this examination, provided they meet the conditions governing the awa~d. A suicide pact between two girls wa3 carried out at Rid?eway, III., when Jessie Cobbman, 17 years old, and Lucy Davidson, 18, drank carbolic acid. The] Cobbman girl had quarreled with Her parents and was living with Miss Davidson. The girls agreed to | die together if an attempt was made j by the former's parents (6 recover her, A constable called for Jessie. She asked for time to dress, but instead went to her room and drank the poison. A moment later her friend also Jrank poison and both expired within a few minutes. Only a Newspaper Guy. Through an arrangement perfected I between the United States weather J bureau and the Southern Bell Tele- | phone company, more than 2-3.000 j Southern farmers will receive the daily weather reports by telephone. The new arrangement began on July 1st. The daily weather nports will be furnished the telephone company by the weather bureau, and the report I will be read to the fanners by telephone operators. Ad a gi>ei hour each day a g in era 1 alarm will be sounded, calling every farmer to the telephone. When they art all assembled the report will be read. Any farther who is not able to answer the signal and hear the report has the privilege of calling the operator and securing the information. Almost. every farmers' telephone line connected with the Bell system has six or more subscribers, and by reading the report to each line the f work can be speedily accomplished. I This is the first comprehensive and | systematic effort to furnish this infor- , mation without costs to the farmers of the South. The spread of the telephone in the rural districts in the past few years hss made it possible to 1 reach such a large number of farmers * through the Bell system, and the dissemination of weather news b3r tele- i phone is one of the many practical 1 uses for the telephone on the farm.
