PAY OF TRAINED NURSES
None too High tor What
They Do, Says One
of Them.
"When father hands Miss Wilson
her check for nine weeks of professional
service in his home," writes a
trained nurse in the Woman's World,
"he is likely to woDder ruefully what
aln&Aa rrninnr frv r?n with ?]1 t.hafc mm -

ey. Twenty-five dollars in ordinary
cases, $30 in obstetrical cases, $35 for
contageous diseases. And the nurse
has had her 'keep* all tne time!
"Very true, Mr. Brown, but pray
remember that you pay your private
secretary $25 a week and seldom expect
her to work more than eight
hours *? day. You didn't have Miss
Wilson for that nine weeks; yon
bought her body and soul. For days
at a time she never set foot outside
your house; night after night she had
to content herself with fitful snatches
of sleep; at the crisis of the disease
she went forty-eight hours without
closing her eyes.
"Moreover, when Miss Wilson leaves
one case it may be weeks before
she gets another. Indeed it is likely
that she would be too exhausced to go
on active duty again if the opportunity
offered immediately. The average
P -* 1 1 t. - r? roA
proiessionai nxe ui nit; ucuncu umot
is ten years. Fifteen years is about
the maximum extent of active service.
The nurse has need to earn, while it is
yet day, for the night comes fast in
vvhich she wnl have -no strengtn to
earn.
"No woman should take up the
study of nursing until she is 22 or 23.
Indeed, many training schools will
not admit her before that ' m At
that age a woman ought to know her
own mind and to be sure that her aspiration
toward nursing is not a mere
childish infatuation.
"The prospective nurse needs the
highest mental and moral development
and an experience in life that
no girl of 2o or under can possibly
have. No mere technical expertness
will ever make a successful trained
nurse. Professionalism of manner
and bearing is one of the worst charges
that can be brought against a woman
in this line of work. The nurse
needs tact, sympathy, knowledge of
human nature, resourcefulness, ability
. to think for herself. She must know
. how to govern with kindness, but firm1
ness.
"The nurse needs a conscience?a
laboratory conscience," a9 I have
heard it called. The bluffer and the
. 9hirk have no place in the sick room.
Pretty well and good enough should
be expurged from the nurses vocabulary.
She must make her own stand
ards of excellence in her work and
[ live up to them to satisfy herself. No
one may ever be able to prove that the
J patient was infected because the
', nurse neglected thorough steriliza5
tion, but the nurse will be a criminal
( in her own eyes if her patient dies."

Mr. Can9! and Mr. Can
Oh, Mr Can't from Mr Can
Is a very different sort of man,
For Mr Can he always tries,
And Mr Can't he always cries;
Now Mr Can gets many a blow,
But he gets the best in the end, you
know.
While Mr Can't get9 notkiug at all?
/For he's down too low to suffer a fall,
Oh, Mr Can gets up with a grin, '
And he says: "I'm bound in the end
to win."
But Mr Can't is a pitiful sight,
For he's whipped before he's begun
the fight;
Aud he says it puzzles him quite a lot,
Why some can win and some can not.
Oh, poor Mr Can't he never knew,
The 9 ecret I'm going to whisper to you;
That you can win if you only try,
And yon certainly can't if you only
cry,
And that is the reason why Mr Can
From Mr Can't is a different man.
